Not one but two of Australia‘s most legendary rare coins – the 1930 penny – are up for grabs to the highest bidder this week.
While pennies were commonplace currency at the time, only approximately 1500 copies of the 1930 penny are believed to exist.
Minted at the Melbourne Mint during the Great Depression, it’s believed the coins may have been struck in error as there was no formal Treasury request to strike pennies that year.

One of the pennies going to auction in Brisbane from Wednesday has already attracted an early bid of $16,000.

Roxbury’s Auction House is set to offer collectors a unique chance to acquire some truly remarkable pieces as Auction 154 unfolds. According to the auction house’s director, Scott Waterman, “Auction 154 presents collectors with another opportunity to secure exceptional pieces, ranging from legendary Australian rarities to significant international issues.”

Among the highlights of this week’s auction is a rare 1914/15 “Rainbow Pound” emergency banknote. These one-pound notes hold historical significance as they were quickly produced without security features to address a currency shortage triggered by the outbreak of war. They were subsequently withdrawn from circulation in April 1915, making them a coveted item for collectors.

Furthermore, enthusiasts will have the opportunity to bid on an iconic 1813 New South Wales ‘Dump’, one of Australia’s earliest coins. This item adds to the allure of the auction, promising a fascinating blend of history and numismatic value.
