A devastating fire has swept through a mechanic shop in Perth, leaving over a dozen vehicles completely destroyed.
Authorities from the arson squad are probing whether an arsonist breached the premises before torching the workshop.
The blaze consumed 15 cars, prompting the rapid response of five fire trucks to Speedline Auto Repair on Colin Jamieson Drive in Welshpool around 5:45 a.m. today.
“Our crews managed to access the site through the front gate, directing a steady stream of water between the vehicles and the building to prevent the fire from spreading further,” explained Ben Borrett, the district officer at Perth fire station.
While the workshop structure suffered minimal damage, 14 vehicles, including a Volvo and a BMW awaiting repairs, were reduced to ashes.
A refrigerated truck from a storage facility on site was also destroyed.
The business owners, who 9News understands were not insured, were distraught today.
“Yeah I think they’re a bit shaken up,” Borrett said.
“Not the best phone call to receive at 6am in the morning.”
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined but the arson squad is investigating after finding a large hole cut into the business’ fence.
The cars are now trapped in a crime scene, their owners waiting to see whether they’re covered for the damage.
