According to Ben Domensino from Weatherzone, the soggy weather conditions expected are attributed to a phenomenon known as the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO).

Domensino explained that the MJO is essentially a pulse of increased rainfall and storm activity that circulates the globe near the equator approximately every 30 to 60 days. This phenomenon boosts the chances of experiencing wetter conditions, particularly in northern and central Australia, throughout the latter half of March and potentially extending into early April.

In line with this, the Bureau of Meteorology’s long-range forecast for autumn predicts above-average rainfall and an increased risk of flooding across much of the tropical north for the remainder of the month.

Looking ahead from April to June, the forecast suggests that most of the country, excluding the far north, will experience below-average rainfall as it transitions into the dry season beginning in May.

From April through to June the forecast is for below average rainfall for most of the country, excluding the far north, heading into the dry season starting in May.
