In perhaps the weirdest solution to Sydney cemeteries running out of room, people have taken to selling burial plots on Facebook Marketplace

Dozens of posts have gone up on the site listing plots of land in cemeteries for sale, with prices ranging from $3000 to $64,000.

Some sellers told 9News.com.au that they were selling their relatives’ plots who had decided to be buried somewhere else or chose to be cremated instead.

Plots weren’t the only thing for sale, entire family crypts are also up for grabs as well as plots already fitted with unmarked headstones

Plots were listed for sale in cemeteries in Leppington, Liverpool, Minchinberry, Woronora, Macquarie Park, Penrith and more.

Although a bit odd, it’s completely legal for the owners of a burial plot to sell it in whichever way they see fit.

When someone buys a burial plot, they don’t own the land, they own the interment right over the land, meaning they get to choose who is buried there.

In 2023, reports emerged that Sydney's cemeteries were running out of space, with the Orthodox and Muslim sections due to run out within four years.

The interment rights owners can sell their plots in a private transfer after an application to the cemetery.

Now, there are just two years before the spots fill up.
