The United States and Iran appear to be gradually moving towards a significant peace agreement that could transform the current ceasefire, which halted weeks of conflict, into a more enduring resolution.
Both nations are discussing the creation of a “memorandum of understanding,” aimed at establishing a comprehensive plan to address all unresolved issues. However, the specifics of this agreement remain under wraps.
A crucial and potentially contentious point in these negotiations is the control over the Strait of Hormuz.
Over the weekend, former President Donald Trump suggested in a social media post that the memorandum would lead to the reopening of this vital maritime passage.
However, numerous Iranian media sources have since countered this claim, asserting that the strait would continue to be under Iranian jurisdiction.
Iran is demanding that the US blockade on its ports be lifted at the same time, but in a social media post on Sunday, Trump said: “The Blockade will remain in full force and effect until an agreement is reached, certified, and signed,” apparently referencing a final accord rather than the memorandum.
The Iranian regime has insisted the Strait of Hormuz should not come under American influence or control.
“The Strait of Hormuz has nothing to do with America. This is an issue between us and the coastal countries,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismaeil Baghaei said.
