Mysterious debris balls found on beaches along the New South Wales Central Coast in August likely originated in Sydney, the state Environment Protection Authority says.

Researchers gathered samples from the Central Coast balls to compare with those taken from various wastewater treatment plants managed by Central Coast Council, Hunter Water, and Sydney Water.

In August, the analysis revealed that the chemical composition of these balls closely resembled that of the Malabar Wastewater System operated by Sydney Water, indicating it as the likely origin.

Sydney Water has initiated an investigation to more accurately determine the exact source within the system.

Efforts are already in progress to prevent similar incidents in the near future, with plans for medium- and long-term solutions also being developed.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will provide additional updates as new information becomes available.
