Heavy rain and strong wind gusts have caused significant coastal erosion at Wamberal Beach and the council has dumped sandbags along the shore in a desperate bid to save homes.

Five properties along Ocean View Drive on the Central Coast have now been told to evacuate by the NSW SES.

Any residents with homes backing onto Wamberal Beach have been warned to stay vigilant and evacuate if necessary.

Multiple homes along Hutton Road in The Entrance North have also been directed to evacuate now due to dangerous surf and coastal erosion.

SES volunteers have started doorknocking in both areas and asking residents to leave now.

“You must evacuate now because it may become too dangerous to stay in this area,” the SES said in an evacuation notice shared shortly before 4pm.

A coastal swell caused dangerous landslips in the Central Coast area in April, and the SES has warned they could occur again.

Trains travelling to and from Wyong have also been cancelled as the storm rages on across the coast, smashing regions from Coffs Harbour in the state’s mid-north down to Bega in the south.

Sydney has also been hammered by significant rainfall and damaging winds.

The towering swells have resulted in multiple Sydney ferries being cancelled.

NSW Minister for Emergency Services Jihad Dib earlier today said the east coast isn’t out of the woods yet and warned the weather will likely become more severe later today and into tomorrow.
