What the weather will be like for Christmas Day around Australia

It might feel about three weeks premature to be thinking about the weather on Christmas Day but early forecasts predict southeastern states will experience a cooler-than-average day.

Temperatures in the top end and south of Australia are predicted to be vastly different on Christmas Day.

Weatherzone meteorologist Brett Dutschke told 9news.com.au this early forecast paints a picture of temperatures on Christmas Day but a more accurate idea will be available from December 15.

But for now, here is Weatherzone’s early forecast for Christmas Day around Australia.

Dutschke said Sydney will see warming temperatures in the days prior to Christmas Day but on the day and Boxing Day, the mercury will drop.

“There’s not much chance of it being a hot day. In fact, it’s likely to be a cooler-than-average day,” he said.

Canberra will see similar conditions to Sydney, with warmer temperatures on Christmas Day but still below average.

Bad news for Melbourne, possible showers are forecast on Christmas Day with cooler-than-average temperatures.

Melbourne has the highest chance of rain in comparison to the other capitals.

Dutschke said there will be some warming in the days proceeding Christmas and it is “likely to be warmer than a few days around it”.

Brisbane will see similar temperature conditions to Sydney and Melbourne on Christmas Day where it won’t be warmer than average, but will likely be an OK day with unlikely showers.

Good news for Adelaide on Christmas Day, it will be the third hottest capital city.

”It will likely be warming up in the lead up to Christmas and Adelaide and Perth have the best chance of being hot out of all the capital cities,” Dutschke said.

“Looks like there will be a cooler change on Christmas Day.

“The day could go either way and that cooler change could include a bit of rain.”

Perth is expected to rank as the second hottest capital for Christmas Day.

”It has the greatest chance of being hot,” Dutschke said.

“Similar to Adelaide, there will be a chance of a cooler change on Christmas Day so it could go either way.

“In Perth’s case, there’s likely to be a reasonably lengthy dry and warming lead-up to Christmas and a cooler change around Christmas day.”

Ranking as number one in the race to be the hottest capital on Christmas Day, Darwin as per usual will take the cake.

The top end is already experiencing a heatwave and this is forecast to continue through the festive period.

An early summer heatwave is on the way for a vast swathe of the nation's north, with areas as far south as Brisbane to see a blast of high temperatures.

“It’s got a higher chance than the southern cities of being hotter than normal at Christmas,” Dutschke said.

“It’s the build up time of year so humidity could be quite high.”

Hobart will see a cool change on Christmas Day with a high chance of showers.
