Gavi’s celebration for FC Barcelona’s second goal against Sevilla at Camp Nou on Sunday evening demonstrated the unity in Xavi Hernandez’s team and explains why it currently boasts an eight-point lead at the La Liga summit.

Though they struggled to find an opening in the first half, the Catalans ran out eventual 3-0 winners against Sevilla in front of their home fans with strikes from Jordi Alba, Gavi, and Raphinha enough to open up the considerable gap over bitter rivals Real Madrid.

Almost decapitated by Loic Bade on the stroke of half time, Gavi, like Raphinha, was rewarded for his perseverance and deserved to get on the scoresheet.

Through an assist that many said reminded them of Lionel Messi, for the way the mentioned Brazilian cut inside the box then laid off a diagonal pass that eliminated a number of Sevilla defenders and found him at the back post, Gavi netted his first strike with the number ‘6’ shirt assigned once his new contract with a €1bn ($1.08bn) release clause was finally registered last week.

More talked about than the goal itself, however, is how the 18-year-old went out of his way to celebrate doubling Barca’s lead – after Alba opened the scoring – with a teammate who wasn’t even involved with the action.

As captured in a viral clip circulated on Twitter, Gavi breaks off from the pack that mobbed him on the pitch and runs towards the touchline.

With a beaming smile and a finger pointing at someone, his target is soon revealed to be Ousmane Dembele, who he gives a warm hug.

The winger is currently sidelined for up to five weeks after suffering a thigh injury against Girona the weekend before last that broke a run of excellent form on the right flank.

Gavi clearly hasn’t forgot about him in a difficult moment for the Frenchman, however, and it this type of unity that has propelled Barca to pole position in the Spanish top flight while they are also on course to win cups both domestically and on the continent.

Xavi believes that Barca can clinch all the trophies on offer to them, and with such a strong sense of team spirit plus a stingy defence, it is difficult to argue with him.
