There is often quite a bit of overlap between the Record and Song of the Year categories at the Grammys, which confuses some people, though it does make sense. In order for a record to be truly great, doesn’t it need to be brilliantly written? Song of the Year goes to the people who actually penned the tune, and while the singer and/or band is usually involved, that’s not always the case.
Like with Record of the Year, there are a few submissions that are all but certain to be nominated, like ele’s “Easy on Me,” Beyoncé’s “Break My Soul,” and Harry Styles’ “As It Was,” though that’s only three cuts, and as of last year, there are 10 spaces that need to be filled.
Here are my predictions for the 10 nominees for Song of the Year at the 2023 Grammys.
Predictions:
ele – “Easy on Me”
Beyoncé – “Break My Soul”
Brandi Carlile – “You and Me On the Rock”
Carolina Gaitán, Mauro Castillo, assa, Rhenzy Feliz, Diane Guerrero, Stephanie Beatriz and cast of Encanto – “We Don’t Talk About Bruno”
Harry Styles – “As It Was”

Kendrick Lamar – “The Heart Pt. 5”
Lady Gaga – “Hold My Hand”
Steve Lacy – “Bad Habit”
Taylor Swift – “All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor’s Version) (From the Vault)”
Zach Bryan – “Something in the Orange”
In addition to the aforementioned ele, Beyoncé, and Harry Styles, previous nominees like Lady Gaga and Brandi Carlile may compete again, though their spots aren’t a given. Big hits by Kendrick Lamar and Steve Lacy could also easily find space in this category, and theater wunderkind Lin-Manuel Miranda may earn his first nod with the earwormy “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” from the animated film Encanto.
There is some question as to whether or not Taylor Swift is eligible for her single “All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor’s Version) (From the Vault).” While the singer-songwriter did share it with voters for inclusion, it’s not clear if it’s even really eligible. The original take of the cut was released more than a decade ago, but Swift doubled its length for the re-release of her album Red. The new edition went right to No. 1 and earned critical praise, but is it “new” enough to be nominated? No word yet, so the world may have to wait until the full lit of nominees is made public until we know for sure.

Billie Eilish (“TV”), Dove Cameron (“Boyfriend”), Em Beihold (“Numb Little Bug”), Joji (“Glimpse Of Us”), Justin Bieber (“Honest”), Lauren Spencer-Smith (“Fingers Crossed”), Lizzo (“About Damn Time”), Maren Morris (“Circles Around This Town”), Muni Long (“Hrs & Hrs”), and SZA (“I Hate U”).
The nominees for the 2023 Grammys will be announced on November 15.
