In 2022, it generated massive outrage when Kylie Jenner was caught using her private jet to take a 12-minute flight to get around L.A. traffic. Private flights have significantly higher rates of pollution than commercial flights, and when Jenner’s trip went viral her sisters and she, as well as a series of other celebrities, were called out for the middle finger they were giving to the very real problem of climate change.
But not all celebrities opt for private jets. Many stars, either because of modesty or a respect for the environment, opt for the more eco and economically-friendly choice and fly on commercial airlines. True, many still spring for first class seats, but anyone who flies coach knows you can’t blame someone for splurging a few extra dollars for some good legroom. Despite wealth, fame, and power, these stars fly among the common folk.
8/8 Prince William
One might think that someone who is one day going to be King of England would never come near a commercial airline. But Prince William and his family help the British taxpayers to rest easy knowing that the stipends they receive as U.K. monarchs are not being splurged on wasteful luxuries like private planes. True, other royals avoid the sardine cans that are modern planes. But not Prince William, who was spotted boarding a flight by another celebrity, as one will find out if they read on…
7/8 Amy Adams
Adams has not been shy about her preference to fly commercial. She even had a viral moment a few years ago when she willingly gave up her first class seat to a veteran and opted to move to coach. The story warmed the hearts of millions when it broke.
6/8 Blake Lively
Lively is also vocal about her preference to fly commercial, and she even jokes about it during interviews. While most of us complain about cramped seating or long boarding times, Lively’s only real issue with flying is when her flights show movies that feature her husband Ryan Reynolds. She is not a fan of watching her husband do sex scenes in crowded areas. Well, fair is fair.
5/8 Jessica Alba
Alba not only opts to fly commercial, but she flies coach too. She will happily pay for first class tickets for her children to enjoy, but the actress and entrepreneur will usually take a seat farther in the back. Posts of Alba flying coach can be seen on her social media pages. What is most impressive about her choice to fly in economy class is that Alba’s business is now worth nearly a billion dollars.

4/8 Anderson Cooper
Remember that celebrity who spotted Prince William flying commercial? Yeah, it was journalist Anderson Cooper. Cooper tweeted “Prince William just got on my shuttle flight,” in 2014. The CNN host and famous interviewer regularly opts for shuttle flights instead of flying private, saving his employers some bank when he has to fly to cover a story.
3/8 Caitlyn Jenner
Jenner is regularly spotted in airports, even by other stars. She was once spotted with the rest of the Kardashian-Jenner clan at an airport by comedian Dennis Leary. Leary told the story during an interview with Conan O’Brien. According to Leary, on the flight he had a violent night terror and when he came to, Caitlyn was standing over his family trying to protect them from the seemingly manic Leary. Well, everyone has a bad flight once in a while.
2/8 Paris Hilton
Yes, really. The heiress and model turned DJ and activist doesn’t just fly economy, she advocates for it. This is a stark contrast to the version of Paris Hilton the world came to know in the early 2000s. Hilton had a reputation for being incredibly elitist and classist, especially after a photo of her wearing a shirt that said “Stop Being Poor” went viral. According to Hilton, that picture was photoshopped. It would seem the person who was famous for being a spoiled rich brat is not the person we were all so desperate to hate. Sure, Paris does occasionally fly private but she does not think of herself as being better just because of that. “Whatever it takes to get where you’re going. I don’t mind going commercial.”
1/8 Bernie Sanders
True, he is not a movie star or a famous musician, but he is one of the most popular leaders in the United States so as a “political star” he counts. Sanders is notorious for flying in coach, something that went viral many times when he was spotted on flights during his runs for president in 2016 and 2020. Sanders is not only so modest that he flies commercial, but he will also be so gracious as to take the highly unpopular middle seat. Whether or not one agrees or disagrees with Sander’s socialist politics will never change the fact that he does live very modestly despite his notoriety. Sanders is not the only high-profile politician to opt for commercial, on the opposite side of the aisle (pun intended) Republican politician Mitt Romney has also been spotted flying coach.
