A somber yet heartfelt farewell was bid to Dame Penelope Keith on Tuesday at a funeral ceremony attended by both adoring fans and notable personalities. The beloved British comedy icon, best known for her role in “To The Manor Born,” passed away peacefully on June 29, after a battle with cancer at her home. Dame Penelope captured the nation’s heart as Margo Leadbetter in the celebrated series “The Good Life” starting in 1975, earning a Bafta TV award for her stellar performance.
The small village of Milford, near Godalming in Surrey, witnessed an outpouring of respect as hundreds gathered to honor Dame Penelope. The funeral cortege journeyed through the streets of the village where she lived and contributed actively to the community, supporting numerous local charities.
Councillor Maxine Gale of the Witley & Milford Parish described the procession, noting it started shortly before 10 am, and moved past familiar stores where the actress was a regular presence. She encouraged village residents to bid farewell to “a very special lady.”
The emotional ceremony saw the attendance of several high-profile figures, paying their last respects to a woman who left an indelible mark both on-screen and off.
Gyles Brandreth of This Morning offered a glimpse into the poignant event via social media, expressing: “I’m on my way to Guildford Cathedral for the funeral of Dame Penelope Keith – a wonderful actress and a lovely person, funny and wise and kind.”
He added in a follow-up tweet: “There was laughter and tears at Guildford Cathedral this morning – a truly beautiful and deeply moving funeral service for Dame Penelope Keith – what a lady and what a perfect service. It caught her completely. She was very special.”
Former Prime Minister John Major also made the journey to Guildford Cathedral. Also, My Family actor Robert Lindsay and Drop The Dead Donkey’s Neil Pearson were among those gathered to pay their respects.
Moving photos showed Dame Penelope’s coffin being brought into the cathedral as mourners gathered outside.
Posting a statement at the time, her family said: “We are deeply saddened to announce that Dame Penelope Keith died peacefully whilst living with cancer at her home in Surrey where she had lived for more than 50 years.
“The family is grateful for the care and support she received throughout her treatments, and ask that their privacy be respected at this time.”
One of her last TV appearances was in October 2025, where Penelope fronted The Good Life: Inside Out on U&Gold looking back on the huge success of the sitcom.
