Annie Wersching was an actress best known for her work in television. She is best known for her role in the hospital drama as well as her voice acting in the video game The Last of Us, but young viewers likely recognize her as Lily Salvatore in the CW’s vampire teen drama The Vampire Diaries.


Sadly, after working in the entertainment industry since 2002, Wersching passed away in late January 2023 after an ongoing battle with cancer. She continued to work until her final days, appearing in several projects throughout 2022 including Star Trek: Picard and The Rookie. Annie Wersching was an American actress best known for her work in television. Though she spent the majority of her time in the entertainment industry working in guest roles, she had several recurring roles. These larger roles include Lily Salvatore in The Vampire Diaries, Leslie Dean in Marvel’s Runaways, and Amelia Joffe in General Hospital. She is also well known for her voice acting in video games such as The Last of Us.

Wersching was born in 1977 in St. Louis, Missouri. She did not begin her career in acting until 2002 when she landed a guest role in one episode of Star Trek: Enterprise as the character Liana. That role opened the door for her to guest star in numerous television shows until joining the cast of General Hospital in 2007. She married Stephen Full in 2009, and together they have three children: Freddie, Ozzie, and Archie.

Annie Wersching kept her battle with cancer very private. She was first diagnosed with cancer in 2020, and while she continued to fight her health concerns, she also continued to act. Wersching did not want to stop doing what she loved, and that was true throughout her final days. Several projects she was a part of aired in 2022, including Star Trek: Picard and The Rookie. Sadly, Wersching passed away on January 29th, 2023.

“There is a cavernous hole in the soul of this family today,” Wersching’s husband Stephen Full said in a statement to the press. “But she left us the tools to fill it. She found wonder in the simplest moment. She didn’t require music to dance. She taught us not to wait for adventure to find you. ‘Go find it. It’s everywhere.’ And find it we shall.” Wersching is lived on by her husband and their three children.

Though not the role she is most famous for, many young viewers best recognize Annie Wersching for her part in the CW’s The Vampire Diaries. The supernatural drama tells the story of Elena Gilbert and the Salvatore brothers Damon and Stefan. Though actress Nina Dobrev stopped playing Gilbert after the show’s 6th season, the show continued for two more seasons before ending in 2017.

Wersching was a late addition to the cast, as her character was previously believed to be dead. She played Lily Salvatore, mother to leads Damon and Stefan Salvatore. Though she only appeared in 18 episodes of the hit show, fans were fascinated by the way the actress handled the complicated character. Wersching gave mother Salvatore the perfect balance between villain and loved one.

5 Annie Wersching Did Voice Acting For Video Games

Annie Wersching is certainly most famous for her roles in television, meaning most fans do not realize she was also highly successful at voice acting. She specifically worked on two video games, one of which is now being adapted into a television show on HBO.

Wersching voiced the character of Tess in the video game The Last of Us. The game was highly successful when it came out in 2013, and the role is viewed as one of Wersching’s most famous. The video game is now being adapted on HBO and actress Anna Torv plays the live action version of Tess. After news of her death rocked the public, HBO added a tribute to the beginning of the second episode of the series, which can now be seen on the streaming service. Wersching also voiced the character Tassyn in the video game Anthem.

After landing her first role in 2002 with Star Trek: Enterprise, Annie Wersching spent several years working in guest roles. Her breakout role did not come until 2007 when she joined the cast of General Hospital. The medical soap opera has been on air since 1963 and currently has 60 seasons. Many actors and actresses have clocked over 2000 episodes on the successful television show. Others have found great success off the show, including stars like John Stamos, Demi Moore, and Eva Longoria. Fans often forget just how many stars get their start on soap operas—George Clooney, after all, started out on the soap opera E.R.

Wersching’s time on the show was not close to the 2000 episode mark that stars like Maurice Benard and Laura Wright have crossed, but the role of Amelia Joffe did kickstart her career. She was a part of the soap opera for 80 episodes in 2007.

After finding success on General Hospital, Annie Wersching was given the opportunity to tackle larger and more complex roles. She was no longer simply a guest star and was cast in many recurring roles. She is particularly known for her work on the show 24, which starred Kiefer Sutherland.

24 initially began airing in 2001 and came to an end in 2010. Wersching was a part of the final seasons of the show after being cast in the role of Renee Walker in 2009. The role was a dream come true for Wersching, and even after the show was over she continued to reminisce about being a part of such an iconic show. “I really, really loved this part, and in your career you hope that you have greater things in your future, but it’s hard for me not to, at this time, think of it as sort of a role of a lifetime because she was so dynamic,” Wersching said of the character. “I will probably mostly miss her.”

1 What Was Annie Wersching’s Last Role?

Though Annie Wersching was privately battling cancer during the final year of her life, she still continued to work in the entertainment industry. She loved her job and did not want to give up acting for anything. She took on the difficult task of playing the Borg Queen in Star Trek: Picard, a critically acclaimed show on Paramount+ which earned her high praise. She appeared in six episodes of the show in 2022.

Wersching’s final role in her career was playing Rosalind Dyer in the television series The Rookie. The show has been highly successful for ABC since it began airing in 2018. The show is centered around Nathan Fillion’s character John Nolan as he attempted to join the LAPD as the oldest rookie. Wersching appeared in 6 episodes from 2019 to 2022, which was her last role before she sadly passed away from cancer.
