Adele is one of the most famous singers on the planet, and it’s difficult to imagine a world where her songs wouldn’t be listened to by those going through a bit of heartbreak, or simply just listening to them because they love her songs. From ‘Someone Like You’ to ‘Hello’, very few of Adele’s songs are completely unknown.
However, what many may find unbelievable is how Adele managed to find fame in the first place. She first rose to fame in the late 2000s, during an age when social media was first rising to prominence, by posting videos of her singing onto the now-defunct social media website, MySpace.
Adele Was Inspired By Her English Teacher
There are multiple people who can be accredited with helping Adele to take the plunge and become a musician. The first who inspired her is her former English teacher, who sparked her interest in English literature and who Adele believes is the reason she is now able to write her song lyrics in the way in which she does.
However, on a more musical level, a little-known fact about her is that she was inspired by the likes of Etta James and Ella Fitzgerald.
She revealed in an interview with The Guardian that up until she was a teenager she only ever listened to chart music, but once she heard this older style of music and realized that that type of music can live on forever, she decided that a career in music could work out for her.
What Song Made Adele Famous?
With a plethora of songs under her belt, many of which made it into the top 100 of the Billboard charts, it can be difficult to pick out which of Adele’s earlier songs were the ones that made her famous. However, there was one in particular that made her stand out to record producers; as well as a few later songs that turned her into a global phenomenon.
Every artist has to start somewhere and Adele is no exception. Even when she had signed to her record label, she was still relatively unknown, and it was imperative to her career that she released a song that could help her on her way to stardom.
Before her career took off, the first single that Adele released was ‘Hometown Glory’, which she released in 2007 and would later be on her debut album ’19’, which was released a year later in 2008. This was the song that then led to a Grammy Award nomination for ‘Best Female Pop Vocal Performance’.

However, it wasn’t until her second album ’21’ was released in 2011 that she achieved global success. It was this album that allowed her to become one of the highest-selling artists of 2011; which was reflected in the amount of awards she was not just nominated for, but actually won, just for that album alone.
How Was Adele Discovered?
Whenever anyone is wanting to become a world-renowned singer, they will often do whatever it takes to make that happen.
Many will take to the streets to do a bit of busking, ask their local pub if there’s any chance they can perform a few songs there, and in the age of the internet and social media, uploading videos of them singing for the world to see.
Since the introduction of the internet, many famous singers have been discovered this way and have seen their careers skyrocket to global stardom; something which may not have happened if they hadn’t uploaded that video. For example, many will know that Justin Bieber found fame by uploading videos of him singing to YouTube.
Another singer who found success in a similar way is Adele. She initially attended the BRIT school, which is a creative and performing arts school, and has churned out many successful artists, including Amy Winehouse, Jessie J, and Leona Lewis. But despite attending a school like this, this wasn’t how Adele became famous.
Even though the school taught her a lot about working in the music industry, one thing it doesn’t guarantee is fame and success. This is when Adele took to uploading videos of herself singing to Myspace and luckily for her things worked out as this is where her former record company, XL Recordings, spotted her and signed her to their books.
Within a year of being signed up with XL Recordings, Adele managed to achieve a huge amount of success. At just the age of 19, she made her TV debut, was awarded the Critics Choice award at The BRITS, was made the BBC’s Sound Of 2008 poll winner, and had her music video for ‘Chasing Pavements’ uploaded to Kanye West’s blog.
Myspace was able to launch the careers of many stars, including fellow musicians Lily Allen and Calvin Harris, so it’s little to no wonder that Adele managed to achieve the success she has in this way and despite her having an amazing voice, she may have never been discovered had she not chosen to upload videos of her singing to this site.
