Chip and Joanna Gaines Have 'Never Once' Worked Out Together After 25 Years

Magnolia Network sweethearts Chip and Joanna Gaines have done a lot together — except for hitting the gym.

“What’s crazy when I think about our life [and that] we have known each other for almost 25 years, and we’ve never once worked out together,” Joanna, 47, said on the Tuesday, July 29, episode of trainer Don Saladino’s “Stronger” podcast. “We are together every day, come to the office every day [and] everything.”

Chip, 50, and Joanna have been together since 2003, later welcoming five children and starting a thriving renovation business in Waco, Texas. (Their brand famously received national attention after the couple showcased their design prowess on HGTV’s Fixer Upper, spawning a lifestyle empire.)

“You think at some point that thought would have been introduced to our ecosystem,” Chip said of the reason why he and Joanna never engaged in joint workouts. “We always worked hard together [and] we play well together.”

The couple stressed that they hadn’t ever even had a conversation about working out as a unit.

“We never even talked about it,” Joanna said. “I mean, he trained for a marathon [while] I was pregnant.”

Chip did note that Joanna was always “super supportive” of his fitness endeavors.

“Typically, I would take on an assignment — whatever the assignment would be — and same with you, and then I would be like, ‘I want to do that. Let’s do that together,’” he said. “It was really my thing, and I did it, and you supported me through the whole thing.”

Chip added, “I remember even as we had to modify the food that I was eating, or I tweaked my ankle, and the next thing you know, I was injured to the point … [where] I had to wear one of those [compression boots] on occasion. You were just so helpful through the whole thing, but it wasn’t, like, we started going on long jogs.”

Joanna further pointed out that she and Chip never said, “Let’s do this fitness thing together.”

The design maven recently got in touch with Saladino, who trains stars like Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, to kickstart a new fitness program.

“You recently reached out to me, [and] you didn’t really mention Chip doing this in a group with us,” Saladino said. “That’s interesting for me to hear how that started.”

Joanna explained that Chip was just planning to “watch” her first gym session without joining in.

“You were wearing boots, and then a couple days later, you came in sneakers and a T-shirt,” Saladino said, explaining how he knew Chip wanted to participate in the workout. “I had, like, a tear in my eye. I’m, like, ‘Oh my God, my boy’s all grown up already.’”
