In a 2020 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Daddario explained that before landing the role in True Detective, she was struggling to be taken seriously as an actor. Frustrated with her career’s stagnation, she made a tactical decision to fight for a role in True Detective.
Daddario elaborated on her strategy, saying, “I remember really fighting for that role or any role in the series because I was at a blockade at that time in my career. I remember I was not getting into audition rooms for roles I really thought I was right for, and I was struggling to be taken seriously like every actor has.”
Daddario played the character of Lisa Tragnetti, a court reporter who becomes involved with Woody Harrelson’s character, in the first season of True Detective. She had auditioned for a different role in the show, but she strategically pushed to be cast in any role to gain exposure in the industry.
Her decision to join the show paid off when an episode featuring a daring scene with her and Harrelson aired. Daddario’s manager informed her the next morning that her phone had been ringing off the hook with offers from various producers and directors.

In an interview with Collider, Alexandra Daddario reflected on the unpredictability of her career, saying that her biggest successes often came unexpectedly. Looking back, Daddario expressed surprise that her character on True Detective resonated so deeply with audiences, even though she didn’t foresee it at the time.
Despite her strong performance in True Detective, Daddario revealed that she wasn’t invited to the show’s premiere and didn’t anticipate the massive impact the show would have on her career.
“I mean, everyone has an ego, but I’m like, ‘If they want me, they’ll call me,’ you know? And if not, I need to build a rich enough life apart from that to be happy. I didn’t expect to be invited. It was only afterward in retrospect when I was at the Emmys that I was like, ‘Wow, I’m a big enough part of this show to be invited to the Emmys on behalf of the show even though I’m not nominated.’ But it was just something that I don’t think anybody expected including myself. I really didn’t expect people to have that reaction to that character the way that they did.”
