Nina Dobrev and Shaun White shockingly called off their engagement and ended their five-year relationship in September 2025.

The Vampire Diaries alum and the Olympic snowboarder went public with their relationship in 2020 and, four years later, White popped the question with a 5-carat ring from designer Lorraine Schwartz during a romantic meal at The Golden Swan in New York City in October 2024.

At the time, Dobrev poked fun at the change in their relationship status by writing via Instagram: “RIP boyfriend, hello fiancé.”

There were no obvious signs that the relationship was in trouble before the couple abruptly split, as they were photographed holding hands during an outing at a Los Angeles farmers market on August 31. The couple even posed for a selfie in bed together less than a week before calling it quits.

Dobrev and White have both chosen not to publicly address their break up, thus far. However, a source exclusively told Us Weekly on September 15 that Dobrev was understandably “devastated” since early wedding planning was already under way.

“[It’s all] still very fresh,” the insider told Us. “[Nina is] supported by her closest girlfriends, who have been checking in on her.”

Us learned that infidelity was not to blame for the separation, as a source insisted that “no cheating [occurred] at all during the course of their five-and-a-half-year relationship.”

“[Nina and Shaun] were very loyal to each other,” they added. “Any online speculation that suggests otherwise is ridiculous.”

While there reports that Dobrev and White disagreed over starting a family together, Us also learned they were actually on the same page about having children in the future.

What Has Nina Dobrev Been Doing Since the Split?

People reported that Dobrev spent time with family in Canada in the immediate aftermath of her breakup. Dobrev seemingly shared a look at her family bonding time in her return to social media, with a photo showing her snuggling with two children. (White and Dobrev did not have any children during their five years together.)

Days later, Dobrev’s good friend Keleigh Teller revealed that the Degrassi alum had joined her on vacation in Italy. Keleigh’s vacation photos featured Dobrev hanging out with Keleigh’s husband, Miles Teller, Chace Crawford and his girlfriend, Kelsey Merritt, as well as other longtime pals.

The Daily Mail subsequently published photos on September 18 revealing that Zac Efron joined Dobrev and their friend group on a private yacht just off the Italian coastline. Efron and Dobrev were photographed laughing together in between dips into the sea and waterskiing.

What Has Shaun White Been Doing Since the Split?

The three-time Olympic gold medalist jetted off to Beijing, China, a few days after the breakup to promote his winter sports tour, The Snow League, holding a three-day event at Yunding Snow Park in December. White shared with his Instagram followers that he was feeling “a bit nostalgic” about being back in China three years after ending his competitive snowboarding career in Beijing. Fans noticed that White limited comments on his Instagram post about being back in Beijing.

White appeared on NBC’s Today on Tuesday, September 16, to discuss the network’s upcoming coverage of the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy. While he didn’t address his split from Dobrev, White did open up about his plans to attend the Winter Olympics as a spectator for the first time.

“I’ll be running around, definitely supporting my friends competing and just taking it in,” he said on Today. “This will be my first Winter Olympics where I’m not competing, so a lot of feelings there, but honestly, I’m excited to support and check it out.”
