Carol Kirkwood has opened up about her divorce heartache and admitted that it’s “sad” when “relationships break down”. Known for her work on BBC Breakfast, the Met Office-trained weather presenter opened up about relationships during a recent interview, in which she spoke about her former marriage.

Carol, who married police officer Steve Randall in 2021, was previously married to property developer Jimmy Kirkwood. However, the former couple divorced in 2008 after 18 years of marriage. She previously admitted that, while this was ongoing, she had to keep her “sunny” persona while appearing on TV, but she also needed to have a “good cry” when she was away from the cameras. Carol has now theorised that there “isn’t such a thing” as a “perfect romance” and shared an insight into her former marriage, noting that it’s “sad” when relationships break down.

She told Woman’s Way: “I love hearing about how people meet. I feel sad when relationships break down. I was married before, and we got divorced, and it’s always sad when that happens.

“But of course, there isn’t such a thing — I don’t think — as a perfect romance, where you’re never going to fall out or have cross words. Of course you are; that’s life.”

Carol, an author who has also appeared on Strictly Come Dancing and The One Show, previously detailed how her job kept her “going” during the divorce and that she was able to place her “grief into a compartment”.

During an interview with Yours magazine, Carol explained that she kept this “separate” from her work; otherwise, she would have likely ended up in a “puddle of tears”.

Despite this, Carol is full of praise for her partner, Steve, whom she described as “very romantic and very generous” in an interview with PA.

Meanwhile, Carol recently left her BBC Breakfast colleagues gobsmacked when she shared details about her previous jobs. She had been asked about her summer holiday roles when she was younger.

She said: “Yes, I did! I worked as a housemaid, as a waitress, as a receptionist — all these things!” In response, Jon quipped: “You did everything!”

But that wasn’t all. Carol, who also starred in The A to Z of TV Gardening, revealed that she’d had another job that was worlds away from her glitzy one as a TV weather presenter.

She said: “Plus, a postwoman as well — in Edinburgh.” Afterwards, she detailed how the job had a surprising drawback: it would make her feel hungry in the morning.

Carol explained that she would “smell toast, bacon, sausages” as she did her rounds.

You can next catch Carol on James Martin’s Saturday Morning on ITV on Saturday, September 6, from 9.30am to 11.40am.
