While Blue Bloods was still airing, fans of the drama TV show wanted to know things like why Jennifer Esposito left the show. Once Blue Bloods came to an end, those same fans had something new to be excited about, the show getting a spin-off called Boston Blue. Since fans have been learning everything there is to know about Boston Blue, there have been some very exciting headlines revolving around the upcoming spin-off.
Since Donnie Wahlberg and CBS have already revealed many reasons why fans should be looking forward to Boston Blue, it may have seemed like that was it. However, recently revealed news about Boston Blue may be the most exciting thing that fans have learned about the spin-off yet.
Since it was announced that there was going to be a Blue Bloods spin-off, the team behind the upcoming show has done a marvelous job teasing it. After all, it feels like fans have regularly been given great news about Boston Blue.
One of the key reasons why Boston Blue has stayed in the news is because of its main star. Between social media and interviews he has given, Donnie Wahlberg has regularly given Blue Bloods fans reasons to talk about Boston Blue.
Even though Donnie has teased fans with many potentially fantastic parts of the show, he recently revealed the most exciting thing yet about Boston Blue. Donnie recently revealed that Boston Blue will immediately feature a cameo appearance from one of his Blue Bloods co-stars.
On July 18th, 2025, Donnie Wahlberg posted an image of himself with one of his former Blue Bloods castmates, Bridget Moynahan, on Instagram.

Abigail Baker | Abigail Hawk | #4 |

Donnie’s caption for that post began by revealing that Bridget Moynahan will appear in the first episode of Boston Blue.
“Reunited and if feels so good! So excited to have my dear friend, and TV sister @bridgetmoynahan, join me for a special guest appearance in the premiere episode of #BostonBlue!”
For Blue Bloods fans who hoped to see the stars of that show appear on Boston Blue, Donnie’s post was truly fantastic to see.
It is important to note that Donnie’s post wasn’t just exciting because it will be great to see Donnie and Bridget reunite as their Blue Bloods characters.
In August 2024, Collider published an article about the best TV spin-offs of all time. That article listed The Simpsons as the best TV spin-off ever, followed by Angel, Better Call Saul, Star Trek: The Next Generation, and The Colbert Report. The remainder of the shows listed in the article were Frasier, Maude, The Jeffersons, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and Laverne & Shirley.
Instead, the fact that Bridget will appear in the first episode of Boston Blue seems to be a harbinger of fantastic things to come for fans of the franchise.
After Donnie made an appearance on the “Morning Magic” podcast in April 2025, a Collider article summarized comments he made about Boston Blue. During that podcast interview, Donnie hinted that Boston Blue could feature appearances from other former Blue Bloods stars.
“It will be a Danny Reagan-based show, but the Reagans are only a phone call away, and Danny Reagan likes to use the phone, that’s all I’ll say.”
With that quote in mind, it shows the greater significance of the fact that Bridget will appear in the first episode of Boston Blue.
When a show gets a spin-off after the series that spawned it ended, fans and members of the media are often most interested in one thing. Whether the stars of the original show will show up on the spin-off.
Since TV stars obviously know that fans will hope to see those cameo appearances, they often leave the door open. However, when spin-off stars say things like, “You never know what could happen,” that often leads to nothing. As a result, when Donnie hinted that Blue Bloods stars could appear during Boston Blue, that easily could have been a tease that went nowhere.
To be clear, the fact that Bridget will portray Erin Reagan in Boston Blue’s premiere is exciting for its own sake. A great actor who has been celebrated in many roles, fans will be happy to see more of Bridget as her Blue Bloods character.

That said, the other reason why the news of Bridget’s appearance is the most exciting news about Boston Blue is its implications. Since Donnie’s hints about his former co-stars have already proven to be true, that likely means there is a good chance other former Blue Bloods stars will show up too.
Bridget Moynahan Will Have Another Boston Blue Role Behind-The-Scenes
As part of Donnie Wahlberg’s aforementioned Instagram post, he didn’t only reveal that Bridget Moynahan will appear on Boston Blue. Instead, Donnie also revealed that Bridget would be working on Boston Blue in an important behind-the-scenes role.
After celebrating reuniting with his former Blue Bloods co-star in his Instagram post, Donnie revealed that Bridget would be working on Boston Blue as a director.
“She’ll also be bringing her incredible directing talents to the show this season! More fun (and surprises) to come. 👀 Let’s go! 💙❤️”
Even though most fans don’t realize it, Bridget has already worked as a director, and it makes sense that Donnie would know that. On top of clearly being friends with his former co-star, Donnie has also witnessed her working as a director.
That is because Bridget directed three episodes of Blue Bloods, according to her IMDb page.
