When Blue Bloods was still being produced, fans of the show wanted to know a lot of facts about the TV show. Thankfully, there were fascinating Blue Bloods facts to learn, like why Jennifer Esposito left the show and why Tom Selleck was willing to shave his iconic mustache. Now that Blue Bloods has come to an end, however, a lot of that same interest is now focused on the show’s spin-off, Boston Blue.

As it turns out, however, Blue Bloods fans should be excited since fascinating news about the stars of the original show has been hinted at. During an interview, Donnie Wahlberg revealed that some Blue Bloods stars could make cameo appearances on Boston Blue in unexpected ways.

Donnie Wahlberg Hinted That Boston Blue Could Feature Unusual Blue Bloods Cameos

When a show has been around for many years, dedicated fans will have spent hundreds of hours watching the show’s characters. The time those fans watched those characters can seem even more endless when they are the kind of viewers who like to rewatch shows.

After spending that much time with a group of characters, it is only natural to become emotionally invested in them. As a result, it can feel extremely disappointing when a long-lasting show comes to an end and suddenly there are no new adventures to watch.

One thing that diminishes the disappointment of a beloved show ending is when there is a spin-off that allows fans to continue to watch at least some of those characters. Fortunately for one group of fans, that show’s spin-off, Boston Blue, could have unorthodox Blue Bloods star cameos.

In June 2025, Parade interviewed Donnie Wahlberg about his upcoming Blue Bloods spin-off, Boston Blue.

During that conversation, Donnie was asked about the possibility of other Blue Bloods actors appearing during Boston Blue episodes. At first, Donnie responded by bringing up how close the cities where Blue Bloods and Boston Blue take place are.

“New York and Boston are really close. They’re not that far apart.”

While Donnie pointing out the two cities’ proximity is exciting in context, what he said next was really interesting.

When Parade’s interviewer was talking to Donnie, they didn’t just ask the actor if there would be Blue Bloods star cameos during Boston Blue. Instead, Parade’s interviewer asked if Blue Bloods stars could appear on Boston Blue through unorthodox means, like Zoom or FaceTime.

In June 2025, TVLine published an article that detailed what is known about Boston Blue. That article stated that Boston Blue will premiere on CBS in the fall of 2025 and is expected to air on the same day of the week and at the same time as Blue Bloods used to.

In response, Donnie made a remark that seemed to hint that Boston Blue could feature Zoom or FaceTime cameos from former Blue Bloods stars.

“I like the way you asked the question. You covered a lot of possible ways for people to drop in on us.”

While continuing to talk to Parade, Donnie addressed why Boston Blue featuring Blue Bloods cameos was a strong possibility.

In addition to starring in Blue Bloods and its upcoming spin-off, Boston Blue, Donnie Wahlberg has been a part of many other movies and shows. Most notably, Donnie was a memorable part of movies like the Saw franchise, The Sixth Sense, Dreamcatcher, and Ransom. Donnie was also excellent in the war drama miniseries Band of Brothers, which was based on true events from World War II.

Donnie explained that Blue Bloods is important to him and his new Boston Blue co-star, Sonequa Martin-Green.

“Yeah, Blue Bloods is important to the audience, it’s important to me, it’s important to Sonequa.”

After many years of him starring in Blue Bloods, it isn’t surprising that Donnie cares so deeply about the show.

At that point in his conversation with Parade, Donnie commented on Sonequa’s desire to maintain Blue Bloods’ legacy.

“She’s a Blue Bloods fan. She’s my partner, and she’s a Blue Bloods fan. She wants to keep that legacy alive, as well.”

Donnie Wahlberg Had Previously Hinted That Boston Blue Would Likely Feature Blue Bloods Star Cameos

Before Donnie Wahlberg hinted that Blue Bloods stars could appear on Boston Blue in unexpected ways, he’d already given fans something to be excited about. While previously speaking to the press about the plans for Boston Blue, Donnie explained why the other stars of Blue Bloods may not be done with their roles.

In April 2025, Collider published an article about an interview that Donnie had given at that time about the plans for Boston Blue. The outlet covered remarks that Donnie made when he appeared on the “Morning Magic” podcast at that time. After clarifying that Boston Blue will focus on his Blue Bloods character, Danny Reagan, Donnie explained why Blue Bloods stars would likely appear during the spin-off.

“It will be a Danny Reagan-based show, but the Reagans are only a phone call away, and Danny Reagan likes to use the phone, that’s all I’ll say.”

During the same podcast conversation, Donnie explained that he couldn’t say much about Boston Blue. That said, Donnie spoke about how honored he was to get to work on Boston Blue.

“I can’t tell a lot of stuff about it other than at this point, I’m very humbled to be producing the show with Jerry Bruckheimer and some incredible writers and producers known as the Brandons. It’s an honor to keep the Blue Bloods tradition alive, and I think that’s what I’ll be doing with the show.”

Based on Donnie’s comments about the plans for Boston Blue, one thing seems to be true about the upcoming spin-off. It seems very clear that Donnie will do everything he can to make Boston Blue a show that Blue Bloods fans will love.
