Dr. Terry Dubrow has been a reality TV fixture for quite some time now. For starters, the doctor has appeared on the show Botched for over a decade, helping patient after patient with the fallout of their mishandled plastic surgery operations. More recently, Terry also debuted a new spinoff of the original show, called Botched Presents: Plastic Surgery Rewind.
Similar to the original format, Botched Presents: Plastic Surgery Rewind brings in new clients each episode, allowing Terry to assess their previous procedures and see what he can do to correct them. Often the conversations are not just about physical looks, but much more about what prompted the clients to opt for them, touching on things like personal insecurities and deep-rooted emotions.
Now that the debut season of Terry’s new show is underway, he’s opened up about his experience of working with clients—and, more specifically, the one kind of patient he tries to steer clear of. His answer about the type of individuals that give him pause may come as a surprise to viewers.
Terry Thinks Twice About Operating On Kids
As it turns out, Terry is hesitant to operate on underage children. In a candid conversation with E! News, Terry went on to say that, even when it came to his own family, these were difficult conversations to have. In the same conversation with the outlet, he explained how there were moments when his own children came to him requesting procedures.
Terry elaborated on how he and his wife managed the topic when it had come up in the past:
It’s hard to be a busy plastic surgeon who puts food on the table doing this, and to say to your kids, ‘No, it’s okay for everybody else, but not for you.’ The way Heather and I handle this is, we go, ‘Okay, let’s talk about that.’ And they go, ‘Oh, here we go. Mom and Dad are going to make us talk about it.’
He went on to admit that while he could be seen as an “accepting” and “permissive” parent most of the time, this was a subject about which he was very cautious.
Terry went on to say that the reason for his resistance to treating young people is because he wants to make sure, first and foremost, that they don’t regret their choices later on. One thing he fears, he says, is allowing his children to get cosmetic surgery and then, later in life, having them come to him and ask why he didn’t make them “work it out” on their own instead of going under the knife.
That said, this doesn’t mean Terry is entirely opposed to his children ever having elective surgery. He explained that he tries to keep an open mind generally, noting, “I am open to my kids making the appropriate changes. [For example,] if they had a bad nose, I would be the first to say, ‘Sure, but what are you hoping to gain?’
Terry Is A Seasoned Reality TV Cast Member
Terry is certainly no stranger to being around famous faces who are interested in the procedures he provides. Fans of the show may know that he himself is married to RHOC star Kim Zolciak, with whom he shares four children—Max, Nick, Kat, and Ace. The pair have been together since 1999, and he has made occasional appearances on the show, particularly for scenes where he and his wife are discussing serious topics.
In the end, Terry’s familiarity with filming for reality TV may actually be contributing to his parenting tactics. He explained that having the production team around often made him think twice about the way he spoke to his kids:
Act like there are cameras around and you’re going to be held accountable for the way you act. That immediately removes [whatever] preconceived doucheyness you might have.
“Give your kids a supportive, loving environment,” he emphasized. “That’s the perfect place to start.”
