Tatiana Schlossberg, daughter of Caroline Kennedy and granddaughter of the late U.S. President John F. Kennedy, faced a devastating prognosis in 2024 when doctors informed her she had just one year to live due to cancer.

In a poignant essay for The New Yorker published in November 2025, Schlossberg publicly disclosed her battle with acute myeloid leukemia, acknowledging that her condition was terminal.

Tragically, only a month after her essay came out, Schlossberg’s family shared the news of her passing at the age of 35, marking the end of her courageous fight.

“Our beloved Tatiana left us this morning. She will forever remain in our hearts,” the JFK Library Foundation expressed in a heartfelt statement shared on Instagram on December 30, 2025.

Tatiana Schlossberg, a noted environmental journalist, was diagnosed with terminal cancer at 35. Reflecting on receiving this life-altering news, she remarked, “During the latest clinical trial, my doctor told me he could extend my life for a year…”

The statement was signed by Tatiana’s family, including her husband, George Moran; their kids, Edwin and Josephine; her parents, Caroline and Edwin Schlossberg; her siblings, Jack and Rose; and Rose’s wife, Rory McAuliffe.

Tatiana Schlossberg Was Diagnosed With Cancer in May 2024

Tatiana revealed in her New Yorker essay that she was diagnosed with cancer shortly after giving birth to her daughter in May 2024. Her doctor noticed an imbalance in her white blood cell count and initially assumed that it was related to her pregnancy. However, they later discovered she has “a rare mutation called Inversion 3.”

Tatiana recalled being told that she would not be “cured by a standard course” of treatment.

“I did not — could not — believe that they were talking about me. I had swum a mile in the pool the day before, nine months pregnant. I wasn’t sick. I didn’t feel sick. I was actually one of the healthiest people I knew,” she wrote. “I had a son whom I loved more than anything and a newborn I needed to take care of.”

Following her daughter’s birth, Tatiana spent five weeks at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital and was transferred to Memorial Sloan Kettering for a bone-marrow transplant. She also underwent chemotherapy at home.

In January, Tatiana joined a clinical trial of CAR-T-cell therapy, a type of immunotherapy against certain blood cancers. However, she later learned that her cancer was terminal.

What Is Acute Myeloid Leukemia?

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a rare form of cancer that affects the bone marrow and blood, according to Cleveland Clinic.

“It’s an aggressive cancer that, left untreated, may be life-threatening,” Cleveland Clinic states. “AML typically affects people age 60 and older, but it can affect younger adults and children. Newer treatments are helping people to live longer with AML.”

Tatiana Schlossberg Opened Up About Her Cancer Diagnosis in November 2025

In her essay, Tatiana reflected on her fears when she first learned about her cancer, revealing that her “first thought” was her children potentially not remembering her after her death.

“My son might have a few memories, but he’ll probably start confusing them with pictures he sees or stories he hears. I didn’t ever really get to take care of my daughter — I couldn’t change her diaper or give her a bath or feed her, all because of the risk of infection after my transplants. I was gone for almost half of her first year of life. I don’t know who, really, she thinks I am, and whether she will feel or remember, when I am gone, that I am her mother.”

Kerry Kennedy Praises Courageous Tatiana Schlossberg Amid Cancer Battle

Kerry Kennedy is proud of her cousin Tatiana Schlossberg after she went public with her terminal cancer diagnosis. “I think she is so courageous to put herself out [there] in such a public way and all of us are holding her close to our hearts and holding Caroline [Kennedy] especially as well,” Kerry, 66, exclusively […]

Tatiana also praised her siblings and husband for their support throughout her journey.

“George did everything for me that he possibly could. He talked to all the doctors and insurance people that I didn’t want to talk to; he slept on the floor of the hospital; he didn’t get mad when I was raging on steroids and yelled at him that I did not like Schweppes ginger ale, only Canada Dry. He would go home to put our kids to bed and come back to bring me dinner,” she wrote.

Tatiana continued, “I know that not everyone can be married to a doctor, but, if you can, it’s a very good idea. He is perfect, and I feel so cheated and so sad that I don’t get to keep living the wonderful life I had with this kind, funny, handsome genius I managed to find.”
