Breaking Down The 'America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders' Season 2 Trailer

If you’re a lover of sports docuseries, Netflix is usually a good bet. Last year, the streamer broke ground with an entirely new kind of reality TV series, this time focused on the entertainers of an NFL team: America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders brought viewers into the behind-the-scenes of the cutthroat competition to make the cheerleading team, starting from the initial round of auditions and carrying all the way through the first game of the season.

The show took audiences by storm for the way it portrayed the grueling schedule and ruthless competition. Now, Netflix has just released the trailer for Season 2, teeing up what appears to be even more drama than ever.

The Competition Is Still Stiff In Season 2

Right from the start of the trailer, Season 2 promises to deliver more scenes of intense competition. In the voiceover for the trailer (from an unidentified female voice), one of the women talks about the close bonds the dancers have with one another—but how, throughout the audition process, those bonds are tested:

You’re like, ‘When we make this team, we’re gonna make it together because we’re such good friends.’ But then it doesn’t always end up like that.

One of the familiar faces from Season 1, Reece Weaver, notes that the talent each year “keeps getting better and better,” which is both good for the team and a source of stress for the individual dancers. We also get glimpses of some women who auditioned last season but who were ultimately cut. This time around, they’re back to make a last impression. “Last year I was cut, but I knew the dream wasn’t over yet,” emphasizes one of them.

Similar to last season, we also hear of some women whose mothers were on the team years ago. Now, years later, they’re hoping to follow in their footsteps.

Emotions Will Be Running High

Things aren’t easy for the judges either, with the women in charge of forming the team noting that there are hundreds of capable dancers but only a limited number of spots as usual. “It’s hard when you have to put your heart aside,” says Judy Trammell, the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders’ longtime choreographer and former squad member.

Though we don’t get the full context, we get quick glimpses of some of the women hugging each other in the locker room, and other moments of them crying. A few also note how stressful their schedule is, with one woman noting that, outside of the team, she works three jobs.

As with the first season, the docuseries promises to follow the drama that unfolds both on and off the field. The description below the video trailer explains how the sophomore season of the show will get even deeper than the first:

This season dives deeper into the stories, sisterhood, and sacrifices of the women who wear the stars on and off the field. Get ready for new faces, high stakes, and raw emotion as these athletes redefine what it means to shine under pressure.

Fans of the first season will recall that the episodes got into grittier topics, including eating disorders, sexual harassment, and mental health. Though it was only touched on briefly, there was also a discussion about how little the women on the squad are paid, forcing many of them to work multiple jobs outside the team while the football players are paid dozens of times as much.

In the comments below the trailer, fans voiced their support for the second season, with many noting that these hardworking women deserve the platform. “I don’t know what more you can say about this group that they haven’t already said…. I think it’s ridiculous that they don’t get paid and this organization takes advantage of them,” wrote one person.

“I used to love watching the Making the Team show back in the day. So happy they’ve started it up again,” shared another. “I definitely like this format better–more documentary rather than competition show. It’s nice learning more about the women, their lives, and what DCC means to them. Hope they get renewed for season 3, 4, and beyond!” they added.
