The investigation into the tragic deaths of filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, has taken a significant turn as authorities release new details. The couple was found brutally murdered over the weekend, sending shockwaves through Hollywood.
Prior to the horrific crime, Rob and Michele, along with their son Nick, had attended a party hosted by Conan O’Brien. During the event, an intense argument reportedly erupted between Nick and Rob, leading to the family’s early departure from the celebration.
Despite not being directly invited to the gathering, Nick joined his parents at their insistence. They were concerned about his wellbeing and didn’t want to leave him alone. Tragically, just hours later, Rob and Michele were discovered dead in their home.
The Los Angeles County coroner’s office has officially ruled both deaths as homicides. The couple suffered multiple stab wounds, with their official death records citing a singular cause of death.
On the day of the murders, law enforcement briefly addressed the media outside the Reiners’ $10.8 million Brentwood residence, shedding light on the ongoing investigation.
Dominic Choi revealed that both victims were discovered within the master suite of their opulent home. He stated: “Officers conducted a thorough search of the residence to determine whether there was any additional victims or suspects, no one else was located.”
Romy Reiner met a horrific scene
The Los Angeles Fire Department were the first emergency responders to reach the scene after receiving the initial call at 3:30pm from a flatmate of Michele and Rob’s daughter, Romy.
Emergency services initially responded under Code Two protocol – utilising flashing lights without sirens.
This was subsequently escalated to Code Three – deploying both lights and sirens.
Following the masseuse’s unsuccessful attempts to gain Rob and Michele’s attention prior to their scheduled appointment, Romy, who resides opposite the property, decided to check on her parents.
Upon entering the home, Romy found her father and immediately fled the premises.
Stars rushed to help
Her flatmate contacted emergency services whilst Romy also reached out to her father’s friend, Billy Crystal.
However, she reportedly remained unaware that her mother had been murdered.
The New York Times revealed that Romy only learnt of her mother’s death when police and paramedics arrived at the scene, with officials subsequently breaking the tragic news to her.
Nick Reiner, 32, faces charges for murdering his parents.
He allegedly booked into the Pierside Santa Monica at 4am, where staff purportedly found the shower “full of blood,” along with a trail extending from his bed and bedding.
Nick Reiner stands accused
On Tuesday, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman filed two counts of first-degree murder against Nick Reiner, who stands accused of killing his parents. The charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Hochman said no decision has been made if prosecutors will seek the death penalty. Hochman said: “I’m here to announce that our office will be filing charges against Nick Reiner accused of killing his parents. These charges will be two counts of first-degree murder with a special circumstance of multiple murders. He also faces a special allegation that he personally used a dangerous and deadly weapon, that being a knife.
“These charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison. No decision at this point has been made with the respect to the death penalty. Nick Reiner is being held without bail. I want to announce these are just charges. Charges are not evidence. Evidence is something that will be presenting in a court of law.”
Nick appeared in court for the first time on Wednesday, dressed in a blue suicide vest. He uttered just three words, responding: “Yes, your honour,” when Judge Theresa McGonigle enquired if he grasped his right to a speedy trial.
The judge also barred Reiner from being filmed during the proceedings before scheduling a fresh date for January 7, when he may submit a plea.
