Brittany Cartwright wasn’t happy when she learned that Kristen Doute and Luke Broderick had gotten engaged during Tuesday night’s episode of The Valley. However, it wasn’t because she wasn’t excited for her longtime friend.

After the episode played out, Luke, 33, explained why he left Brittany, 36, out of his surprise boat proposal to Kristen, 42, in Hawaii, as Kristen, who gave birth to her first child last month, admitted to understanding his reasoning and Brittany shared why she was so upset.

“[I was] so happy for them. I hope it doesn’t seem like I wasn’t because I am. I was just salty that I wasn’t involved, but like, [Zack Wickham] was, [Nia Booko] was, [Danny Booko] was, and I was just kinda like, ‘But I’m her best friend,’” Brittany explained on the July 1 episode of The Valley: After Show.

Adding insult to injury for Brit was the fact that she wanted to go fishing — and loved to plan themed events.

“I was already pissed off that I wasn’t on the fishing boat because I wanted to go fishing … [And] selfishly, I would’ve just loved to have been a part of [the celebration]. That is so my thing. I am the theme queen. I am the party thrower. I am so good at that kind of stuff.”

After noting that Zack, 36, did a great job decorating for Kristen and Luke’s engagement party, Brittany said she was “a little off” due to the drama she was facing with Jax Taylor, 45, at the time. 

“It was just all wrapped up in one, the drinking all day … I was in a weird [place]. I’m embarrassed of myself of how weird of a space I was in .. I was not myself,” she confessed. 

Although Luke revealed that he didn’t want Brittany included because he felt that her “soft spot” for Jax could cause him to find out, and lead to the surprise being ruined, the explanation didn’t make sense to Brittany.

“I was like ‘But I divorced him .. What is going on?’” she recalled.

Meanwhile, Luke said that while he “[loves]” Brittany, he didn’t trust her to keep Kristen’s engagement from Jax.

Also, he continued, “Kristen and I have gotten a lot closer with Danny and Nia over the past year. [And] it’s the only couple I believe can keep a secret.”

Speaking of Luke’s decision to leave Brittany out of their milestone moment, Kristen said she understood why Luke opted to keep their engagement between just a few people. 

“One extra person could’ve ruined everything,” she noted.

And Zack agreed, signaling to Luke’s efforts to make sure Kristen was actually surprised.

“That’s why it’s on a fishing boat,” he explained. “[But] had I not been involved, I probably would’ve lost it. I’m not gonna lie .. but I would’ve been so happy in knowing that, okay, only one person was involved because he reiterated a thousand times, ‘Do not tell anybody. If you tell Brittany, I’m going to be so mad at you.’ And I was like, ‘Okay.’ He didn’t want anybody to know. He thought that’s what was best. It’s not my engagement, I have to respect his wishes, but Brittany was so salty.”

Also on The Valley: After Show, Kristen remembered how confused she was by Luke not wanting to bring Brittany with them on the boat.

“I’m like, ‘Well, Brittany really wants to come fishing with us.’ He’s like, ‘I think it’s just the four of us.’ … [and] I’m like, ‘she keeps saying it … I don’t want her to be upset. What would be the reasoning she can’t come? It’s kind of mean.’ And he’s like, ‘I think if it’s just the four of us it’d be really nice,’” she disclosed.
