In a touching revelation, Carol Kirkwood has opened up about the sorrow of not having children, while also expressing gratitude for the fulfilling life she has led. The beloved BBC Breakfast weather presenter shared her reflections during an interview, months after releasing her fifth novel, “Meet Me at Sunset.” The conversation naturally turned to the topic of family.
Although Carol grew up in a large family as one of eight siblings, she herself hasn’t had children. In the past, she has spoken about her long-standing desire to become a mother, revealing that she explored every avenue to make it happen, but unfortunately, it was not meant to be.
In a recent heartfelt admission, Carol revealed that she and her medical team never discovered the reason behind her inability to conceive. Yet, she chooses to focus on the positives, reflecting on the vibrant life she has enjoyed.
Speaking to Candis Magazine, Carol expressed that she “would have loved” to have had a family. Despite the unanswered questions, she remains undeterred by disappointment and acknowledges a silver lining.
Reflecting on her life choices, she remarked, “Well, just look at the life I’ve had. I couldn’t have achieved half of it if I’d had children at home.”
Speaking to Yours Magazine in 2022, Carol shared a similar sentiment about her impressive achievements, noting that “none of that would have been possible” if she’d had children to care for at home.
Her career with the broadcaster started at BBC Scotland before switching to radio. She would marry property developer Jimmy Kirkwood and take a break from the BBC to work in recruitment.
She returned to the BBC more than three decades ago when she joined as a freelancer in 1993. She would then become a regular fixture on The One Show and BBC Breakfast as a weather presenter.
Sadly, Carol and Jimmy divorced in 2008 after 18 years of marriage. She would go on to tie the knot with her second husband, police officer Steve Randall, in 2021, but has previously noted how she had to keep her “sunny” persona on camera.
Speaking to Yours magazine, she said: “I still had to be sunny Carol on screen. It was all so shocking to me. I’d come off air, go to the ladies, have a good cry and then reapply my eye make-up before stepping in front of the cameras again.”
She explained how this helped with the “healing process”, pointing out that she’d put her “grief into a compartment”. Carol said this was something she kept “separate” from her work; otherwise, she would have been in a “puddle of tears”.
Yet, Carol has since found happiness with her new husband, Steve. She revealed to PA that her partner was “very romantic and very generous” and a “lovely man”.
Speaking to The Times, she said: “I offered to sell my home so we could buy a place together, but he’s happy living here. He’s a keeper. He’s a very good cook and tidy as well, tidier than I am.”
