Olivia Dean, the Grammy-nominated artist behind the chart-topping hit “Man I Need,” recently revealed that her motivation to challenge Ticketmaster over what she considers exploitative pricing came from a single mother’s story.
In November, as tickets for Dean’s tour began appearing on resale platforms with exorbitant markups, she took to Instagram to criticize the ticketing company, labeling the practice as “vile” and “disgusting.”
During a Q&A session with Gayle King at a Soho Sessions event in New York, Dean expressed, “Live music should be accessible to everyone. It shouldn’t be a luxury reserved for those with deep pockets.”
The catalyst for Dean’s stand was a heartfelt video she saw from a single mother tagged in one of her social media posts.
“This album was crafted to forge connections,” Dean explained, recounting, “I watched a video where the single mother shared, ‘This album resonated deeply with me. I can’t afford a ticket… I have enough for gas and a babysitter, but could you spare a ticket?’”
“I was like, ‘You’re exactly the person that should be coming to the show,’” she said.
Dean revealed that she sent out her Instagram post before taking off for a flight.
“I was just vexed,” she recounted. “And then the plane landed and it was in the papers.”
Ticketmaster responded saying it would cap the resale ticket prices for her shows at face value, saying it supported “artists’ ability to set the terms of how their tickets are sold and resold.”
Dean performed her hits at the event including “Dive” and ‘Lady Lady” for a crowd that included Maggie Rogers, Mariska Hargitay, Edie Falco, Dana Bash, Van Jones, Alexandra Richards and Lillian Hartley.
“I think sometimes people use music as a tool to get famous,” Dean, who is nominated for a Grammy for Best New Artist, told the crowd. “I think I just wanted to make music and I’ve got a little bit famous on the side.
