Chicago Med Star Steven Weber Reacted To The Possibilities Of The Baby Cliffhanger
Share and Follow

During the 10th season of Chicago Med, the hit TV show underwent a lot of incredible changes. Some examples of that include improving a beloved character, bringing the show’s stars from the past back, and producing the best episode in the show’s history. Chicago Med’s 10th season also featured storylines that were unusually fun, stopped mistreating Oliver Platt’s character, and did a wonderful job introducing new characters.

On top of everything else Chicago Med’s 10th season accomplished, the season also ended with a baby cliffhanger that got viewers talking. On top of fans discussing the season’s ending, Steven Weber has also spoken publicly about how the baby cliffhanger could affect his Chicago Med character.

Chicago Med’s Steven Weber Discussed How The Baby Cliffhanger Could Affect His Character, Dr. Dean Archer

As every Chicago Med fan will already know, some truly incredible events have happened throughout the medical drama’s history. For example, during Chicago Med’s most recent season, the 10th season, Dr. Mitch Ripley was almost buried alive as he attempted to save someone.

However, the 10th season of Chicago Med ended on a much more personal level. During the finale, it was revealed that Dr. Hannah Asher is pregnant, and it was heavily implied that either Dr. Dean Archer or Dr. Mitch Ripley is the father.

With fans left guessing who the father of Dr. Asher’s baby is, it was fascinating to wonder how Chicago Med’s cast feels about the cliffhanger. Fortunately, the actor who portrays Dr. Archer, Steven Weber, spoke out about how the baby cliffhanger could affect his character.

In June 2025, Steven was interviewed by Deadline after the 10th season of Chicago Med ended.

During that conversation, Steven discussed the implications of Dr. Archer becoming a father for the second time. Steven began by looking at the optimistic possibilities for Dr. Archer’s second time as a father.

“I think having him establish himself in a healthier way as a parent is obviously an option that the writers and he would look forward to exploring.”

As Chicago Med fans will already know, Dr. Archer has had a difficult relationship with his adult son, Sean Archer. In many scenes, Dr. Archer has openly blamed some of his son’s struggles on his poor parenting choices.

While Steven began looking at the positive potential of Dr. Archer having a second child, he wasn’t looking at the situation through rose-colored glasses.

Over the last several seasons of Chicago Med, seeing how Dr. Dean Archer has evolved as a character has been fascinating. Initially a very stern character that fans didn’t like, Dr. Archer has learned to show his softer side while still having extremely strong opinions and remaining stern at times. The character changing in that way has made Dr. Archer one of the most popular current Chicago Med characters.

While speaking to Deadline, Steven expressed his opinion that Dr. Archer would struggle to embrace being a new kind of father.

“It’s not going to be easy. You don’t suddenly drop decades of a kind of response to vulnerability that he perceives as danger and become a great loving dad who sings Coochy, coochy, coo, and all that stuff. It’s gonna be challenging.”

While Dr. Archer has shown his sweet side, there also is no doubt that the character wants to do things his way. Since Dr. Archer’s has only raised a boy, it makes sense that Deadline asked Steven how having a daughter could affect Dr. Archer.

In response, Steven told Deadline that he thought that Dr. Archer having a daughter would be great. While continuing to discuss the prospect of Dr. Archer having a daughter, Steven brought up his personal life.

“I think he’d be great. I think it’d be fantastic. It’s funny, because I’m the parent of two boys, and it’s very different than being the parent of girls. There are certain things that are expected of a parent, in any event, but being the parent of a boy would be pretty good for Dean. The parenting he received most probably was not good, and the parenting of his son, Sean, was, for the most part, not good, until very recently. So it would be interesting for him to have that chance to start modeling good, healthy male behavior. However, maybe the way to do that is to have a daughter? It would be fascinating and great for him, given that his son is already an adult.”

While having a daughter would be a big change for Dr. Archer, it would be a huge deal for the character no matter what if he is the father of Dr. Asher’s baby.

While speaking to Deadline, Steven discussed the prospect of Dr. Archer becoming a father again at his age.

“He’d be 64 or 65 by the time this kid is born, but luckily, I’m in great shape. With that said, at any second, he could slip and fracture his head. There’s an ongoing conversation about older parents, especially older fathers. I have a couple of friends who are older fathers, who may not be around long enough, but on the other hand, they possess a kind of wisdom and love that a younger parent might not have, so it’s a trade-off.”

During his comments to Deadline about his character becoming an old father, Steven also commented on Dr. Archer’s relationship with Dr. Asher. If Dr. Archer turns out to be the father of Dr. Asher’s baby, their relationship that has built over the last several season will be hugely important.

“I think it’s one of his concerns, but he’s also feeling things for the first time that he hadn’t felt for years, which is a genuine love for Hannah. It’s not a romantic love, it’s a deeper, kind of interesting personal connection that has to do with vulnerability and a feeling of safety. I think that’s motivating him, or that could motivate him to want to be involved with this child, because he’s believing in himself more. Thanks, in no small part to Hannah.”

Steven Weber Argued That Dr. Dean Archer Likely Is The Father Of Dr. Hannah Asher’s Baby

During Steven Weber’s June 2025 Deadline interview, Steven Weber explained in great detail why he thinks that Dr. Dean Archer is the father of Dr. Hannah Asher’s baby.

“I think if you follow the breadcrumbs, you’ll see that it’s most likely that Archer is the father. A few episodes back, I think it was in “The Book of Archer,” he and Hannah have an equally ambiguous encounter. If you relax for a second, it makes sense that they might have hooked up or connected in some way that is interesting and challenging. There’s nothing 100% definitive here, but you should put your money on Dean.”

Later during the same Deadline interview, Steven made another comment that implied he thought Dr. Archer was the baby’s father. While talking about how hard becoming a father again would be for Dr. Archer, Steven made a telling comment about a discussion he had with Chicago Med’s showrunner, Allen MacDonald.

“Jessy Schram and I have spoken with Allen MacDonald and expressed ourselves with the hope that, yes, it would be difficult and challenging. The audience is a lot smarter than people give them credit for. I think they want something challenging, not something that’s just the easy answer, because it would rob both characters. They have a vitally important dynamic, which keeps people on edge, and it reflects how it would be more realistically dealt with.”

In May 2025, Chicago Med‘s showrunner spoke to TVLine about Chicago Med’s 10th season finale. During that interview, Chicago Med’s showrunner stated that despite any evidence that anyone wants to point to, the father of Dr. Asher’s baby hasn’t been confirmed yet.

“I’m sorry to say that I can’t tell you that it officially confirms anything, because there’s more things coming up in the fall, and I do enjoy torturing the audience all summer long.”

It is safe to say that Allen has succeeded in torturing Chicago Med fans, since they are dying to know who the father of Dr. Asher’s baby is.
