When it comes to comedy, sometimes the more outrageous the better. That is exactly what you get in Cameron Diaz’s movie from the ’90s, There’s Something About Mary. Some may not see it for its gross-out humor and cringe-worthy moments, instead finding it offensive, but the film was a huge hit in its time and remains beloved by many today.

The casting process for the hit movie There’s Something About Mary was not without its challenges, as the Farrelly brothers had several actors in mind for key roles who ultimately turned down the parts. For example, the at the time unknown actor Owen Wilson and Jon Stewart from The Daily Show were originally approached to play the lead character but declined, leading to Ben Stiller being cast instead. Similarly, there was a first choice, and the only choice at the time to play Warren, Mary’s brother that sadly didn’t work out either. However, despite the initial setbacks, the final cast brought their best to the project and helped to make it the comedy classic it is today.

Cameron Diaz Was Always Supposed To Be Mary

Cameron Diaz is the only actor in There’s Something About Mary that was set to be in it from the start. It’s hard to believe, but it’s been over two decades since Cameron Diaz and the Farrelly brothers burst onto the scene in 1994. The year was a huge one for all of them, as they each had breakout success. Cameron Diaz had her role in The Mask, which oddly some think she was miscast for and the Farrelly brothers had Dumb & Dumber.

Interestingly enough, both films also starred Jim Carrey, who was carving out his own niche in Hollywood at the same time. Looking back, it’s clear that 1994 was a turning point for all involved, and it’s a year that will always be remembered fondly by fans of these talented individuals. Bill Murray was the first to be mentioned to play the character Healy. In the long run, though, Peter and Bobby Farrelly deemed him too advanced in age to play the part. Vince Vaughn and Cuba Gooding Jr. were also considered, but Matt Dillon ultimately secured the part.

Brett Favre made a notable appearance as himself in There’s Something About Mary. The Farrellys are not Green Bay Packers fans, however; they are New England natives with a fondness for Boston sports teams. Predictably, they initially wanted Drew Bledsoe, quarterback of the New England Patriots at the time, to star in the film, but Bledsoe was unable to do so due to injury. While Steve Young was also approached for the role, he declined because of its content.

As a result, the Farrellys decided to cast Brett Favre, who was a rising star at the time. Despite their lack of enthusiasm for the Packers, they were impressed with Favre’s charisma and ability to deliver comedic lines. In the end, his cameo proved to be one of the most memorable moments in the film.

Chris Farley Was Supposed To Be In There’s Something About Mary

Chris Farley was an amazingly entertaining comedian who had a knack for making people laugh with his outrageous antics and larger-than-life personality. He was highly sought after in Hollywood for his comedic talents, and many directors and producers wanted him for their movies. One such movie being, There’s Something About Mary, in which Farley was wanted for the role of Warren, Mary’s brother. However, fate had other plans.

Chris Farley’s health was quickly deteriorating due to his struggles with substance abuse, and he had to turn down the role in the movie. It was a devastating blow not only to the movie’s production team but also to Farley’s fans who were eagerly waiting to see him on the big screen again. Sadly, Chris Farley passed away December 18, 1997, at the young age of 33, which happened to be while There’s Something About Mary was still in production. Farley left behind a legacy of laughter and a void in the comedy world that has yet to be filled quite the same way. Despite his struggles, he will always be remembered as one of the funniest and greatest comedians of all time.

In a 2020 interview with Gwyneth Paltrow, actress Cameron Diaz recently spoke out about the pressures of leading big-budget films. Diaz admitted that the intense level of work and constant public scrutiny became overwhelming, causing her to step away from the industry. While some may not understand her decision, Diaz believes that those who have experienced similar pressures will relate to her experience. This raises important questions about the impact of fame and success on mental health in Hollywood.

During an interview with comedian Kevin Hart on his talk show Hart to Heart in 2021, Diaz discussed how difficult it can be to maintain a public persona while also keeping your private life separate. According to Diaz, when you are the face of a brand or a movie, everything else that makes you who you are has to be handed off to other people. In other words, maintaining privacy and boundaries becomes increasingly challenging as your public profile grows.

This is an important insight into the lives of celebrities and public figures that many people may not fully understand. Diaz’s words serve as a reminder that even those who seem to have it all can struggle with the pressure of constantly being in the spotlight. It is important to respect the privacy and boundaries of public figures and to remember that they are human beings with complex lives outside their public persona. Diaz’s words also highlight the importance of self-care and finding a balance between public and private life, no matter who you are or what you do.
