Some celebrities struggle with addiction for part of their careers, or their entire lives. Luckily several are able to get help, even though they might relapse more than once. Unfortunately some celebrities have lost their lives to their addictions.
Chris Farley is one star who lost his life to addiction. The actor and comedian has been called “unhateable” by his friend and former Saturday Night Live cast mate Chris Rock. Unfortunately, Farley passed away at 33, meaning there was much more the actor could have done. It seems Chris Rock knew he’d never see comedian Chris Farley again following their last encounter at Farley’s home.
Chris Rock Has Called Chris Farley ‘Unhateable’
Some celebrities are unable to get along and simply stay away from each other, and some enter into huge feuds for a number of reasons. However, many celebrities become friends with each other, and some form incredibly strong bonds.
Chris Farley was good friends with Chris Rock, along with several others including David Spade, Tim Meadows and Adam Sandler.
According to Fox News, on the Fly on the Wall podcast, Chris Rock, David Spade and Dana Carvey discussed Chris Farley as a person and a comedian, with Rock calling the Black Sheep actor “unhateable”.
Talking about his Farley’s time on SNL, Rock stated, “He had a way of stepping into funny – like it was just on his shoe, he didn’t know how he got there.”
Spade mentioned that Farley “was always sort of in awe of literally every other cast member”. However, Spade seemed to believe, “most people would be thinking, ‘Wait, you’re the great one, dude.'”
Discussing Farley as a person, the Down To Earth actor described Farley “as having ‘a warmth to him’ and that he was ‘unhateable'”.
Rock continued, “He’s just always himself, you know what I mean. In a good way…he didn’t have to really, you know, get into character or anything. He was just funny….and you just bought he was whoever he was playing.”
Rock also seemed to also be thinking about what could have been. “Wow, what would that guy have done?”

For numerous reasons, several stars have struggled with addiction, including actor and comedian Chris Farley. Sadly, Farley passed away in December 1997 from an overdose.
As Chris Rock was leaving Farley’s apartment, without actually knowing it was their last time to talk, it seems Rock seemed had the thought that he would never see his friend alive again.
Farley’s friend and fellow SNL cast mate Chris Rock had last seen Farley at the Tommy Boy actor’s apartment. Chris Rock discussed the last time he saw Farley with Esquire.
“I remember I was at his apartment. He was showing me his apartment. I leave, I see him out the window, and I was like, ‘That’s probably the last time I’m going to see him.’ I knew.”
Discussing their time on SNL, the Spiral star stated, “Me, Sandler, Spade, and Farley – we shared an office at Saturday Night Live. We called it a dorm. We’re friends to this day. I love those guys.”
Chris Rock Believes The Famous SNL ‘Chippendales’ Sketch Wasn’t Good For Chris Farley
Chris Farley’s Chippendales sketch seems to be one of the more popular SNL sketches. However, it appears Chris Rock and other friends of Farley’s believe the ‘Chippendales’ sketch wasn’t good for the comedian.
Although the sketch is still incredibly popular today, some close to Farley didn’t seem to like the sketch that much. According to The Ringer, Bob Odenkirk said in The Chris Farley Show, “I didn’t like the fact that the first thing he became known for was that Chippendales thing, which I hated. He never should have done it.”
Chris Farley reportedly struggled with insecurities all of his life, including his weight. According to Looper, Odenkirk wrote about the sketch in his 2022 memoir, Comedy Comedy Comedy Drama: A Memoir.
“I know it confirmed Chris’s worst instincts about being funny, which was how he proved his worth – that getting laughed at was as good as getting a laugh.”
In The Chris Farley Show, Chris Rock said, “The joke of it is basically, ‘We can’t hire you because you’re fat.’ I mean, he’s a fat guy, and you’re going to ask him to dance with no shirt on. OK. That’s enough You’re gonna get that laugh. But when he stops dancing you have to turn it in his favor. There’s no turn there. There’s no comic twist to it. It’s just f****** mean.”
Tom Arnold remembered the conversation he had with Farley about the sketch. “He called me and was like, ‘Lorne [Michaels] and everyone wants me to be a fat guy. They want me to do a sketch where I’m stripping for Chippendales with Patrick Swayze, and they want me to take my shirt off. And then I’m the fat guy. What do you think? It’s just embarrassing.”
No matter what anyone thinks of the sketch, Chris Farley danced into people’s hearts when he auditioned for Chippendales to Loverboy’s Working for the Weekend.
