Jeremy Clarkson’s highly acclaimed farming programme made a triumphant return to Amazon Prime just a few weeks ago. After catapulting young farmer Kaleb Cooper to stardom in the early series, Harriet Cowan briefly took over the reins. The rising star has now opened up about the heart warming aspect of her newfound fame, revealing that she was approached by young girls on the street who share an inspiring message with her.
The 24-year-old, who temporarily filled in for Kaleb while he was touring the country with his show, quickly became a celebrity in her own right. Her straightforward, no-nonsense approach, coupled with her passion for farming, won over viewers. During her brief but impactful screen time, she seemingly rescued Diddly Squat Farm from Jeremy’s antics, tackling everything from pig births and fence-making to purchasing new cows.
Since the show aired, Harriet has been flooded with support and praise on social media as she strives to promote farming to the younger generation, leading to some truly wholesome encounters when out and about.
In a conversation with the BBC, she discussed her life as a farmer: ” I think when you talk to somebody and ask what they stereotypically think of when someone says farmer they say ’60-year-old man with a checked shirt and a beer belly’, and a lot of the time that is it, but us women are out here and farmers too.
“Just because I’m a small blonde who likes to curl her hair and wear make-up, it doesn’t mean I can’t be a farmer. I’m trying to change the norm of the man being the farmer and the woman being the stay-at-home wife and cook.
“When the war was on, women did all the farming, so we have always farmed – it’s just changing that stereotype.”
Harriet’s stint on the show seems to have already made an impact, as she shared an interaction with a young girl on TikTok. She posted a clip saying: “You look happier. Thanks a little girl just came up to me and said ‘I want to be just like you when I grow up'”.
She captioned the post: “This gets me every time, can’t believe it honestly.”
Harriet’s TikToks have amassed a significant following on the platform, skyrocketing from a few thousand followers before the show to nearly 750,000 now, racking up more than three million likes in the process.
Fans have been quick to express their support, with one commenter writing under the video: “THIS IS WHAT GIRLS NEED – inspired by a variety of fun, clean living, capable, caring, creative, organised, funny young women.”
Another farmer chimed in: “About as good a compliment as possible. Our industry is nothing without young eager people. Well done.”
