Cole Hauser Reflects on the Absence of Taylor Sheridan’s Guidance on Dutton Ranch Set

“Dutton Ranch” came with a number of necessary changes for longtime “Yellowstone” star Cole Hauser, but the fact that the show’s co-creator Taylor Sheridan didn’t have as much of a presence on the spinoff really threw him for a loop — especially early on. Even so, the actor relished the opportunity, and was ultimately proud of how everything turned out. We won’t get into all the behind-the-scenes drama on “Dutton Ranch” here. While discussing Sheridan’s absence with Film Inside, Hauser himself specifically noted that he tried to ignore all of the “outside noise.” And yet, he did acknowledge, “There [were] challenges, you know? Not having Taylor there […] everything had changed.” 

Cole Hauser, a familiar face from “Yellowstone,” confessed that stepping onto the spinoff set brought a sense of unfamiliarity. Apart from a few constants like Kelly Reilly, Finn Little, and the seasoned director-producer Christina Voros, the environment was filled with fresh dynamics. Embracing this change, Hauser found solace in the challenge it presented. “I enjoy a challenge,” he remarked, emphasizing the effort it took to adapt and excel with a new team. He described the process as one of dedication, alongside navigating through new writers to discover the most compelling ways to tell their story. “I’m proud of what we accomplished,” Hauser confidently shared, hinting at his enthusiasm for the upcoming season of the popular spinoff.

Yet, Hauser wasn’t alone in navigating the “Yellowstone” spinoff sans its creator, Taylor Sheridan. Together with Kelly Reilly, they openly discussed this phase in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “I stepped into this season thinking, ‘Okay, I don’t have Taylor [Sheridan]’s words anymore, and that was intimidating because they’re big shoes to fill,'” Reilly expressed. She continued, voicing her initial skepticism about the absence of Sheridan’s distinctive touch. However, as Hauser noted, the duo adapted by improvising and building a newfound confidence. “It was about working on our feet, and we can do that now,” Hauser added, highlighting the growth and teamwork fostered with Voros.

Despite the strides made, questions linger about whether this method is sustainable long-term. Reilly jokingly remarked, “I think I might die,” cautioning against this high-pressure approach. Hauser acknowledged the concern, agreeing that it might become tiresome quickly. Fortunately for fans of the beloved on-screen duo Rip Wheeler and Beth Dutton, Reilly hinted at Sheridan’s potential return. “We talk to him now about what the next season could be, and he wants to be involved,” she revealed. Viewers have expressed disappointment over Rip and Beth’s limited presence in the first season of “Dutton Ranch,” suggesting Sheridan’s return could bring them back into the spotlight. Only time will reveal how the series will evolve.
