The seemingly idyllic marriage between Rory McIlroy and Erica Stoll faced a major challenge in May 2024 when McIlroy filed for divorce. The move was quickly surrounded by rumors of an alleged affair with reporter Amanda Balionis. However, within a month, McIlroy withdrew the filing and addressed the public. “The recent rumors about my personal life are regrettable,” McIlroy, known for his privacy, stated to The Guardian. “After some reflection, Erica and I have decided that our future is strongest as a family. We have resolved our differences and look forward to a fresh start,” he elaborated.
The couple, who have since relocated to the U.K., appeared committed to repairing their relationship. Nevertheless, a new book suggests their issues ran deeper than previously believed. In “Rory: The Heartache and Triumph of Golf’s Most Human Superstar,” author Alan Shipnuck draws parallels between Stoll and Elin Nordegren, who famously divorced Tiger Woods in 2010 after his infidelities came to light. Shipnuck writes, “It didn’t help that Erica had become a neo-Elin Woods, shying away from interviews and remaining a mystery to golf fans,” as reported by the Daily Mail.
The book also features some candid remarks from McIlroy’s fellow golfers. Paul McGinley, an Irish golfer, expressed empathy for Stoll, noting, “Being Rory’s wife must be challenging,” and highlighting her reserved nature. Meanwhile, Lee Westwood didn’t mince words, calling McIlroy a “f***ing drama queen.”
Alan Shipnuck’s portrayal of Erica Stoll is not the first to suggest she might be at a disadvantage in her marriage to Rory McIlroy. In May 2024, a source revealed to People the difficulties of being married to a professional golfer. “Life as a golfer’s wife is tough,” they shared. “With constant tournaments and practice, there’s a need for immense trust.” They also pointed out that the presence of “beautiful” fans at events, coupled with the athlete’s frequent absences, leaves the other parent responsible for most child-rearing duties. “Expecting them to be home and involved with the kids is unrealistic,” the source added.
The reported difficulty of Erica Stoll’s marriage to Rory McIlroy
Alan Shipnuck isn’t the first to imply that Erica Stoll was getting the short end of the stick in her relationship with Rory McIlroy. In May 2024, an insider dished to People about the challenges that come with romancing professional golfers. “It’s a hard life being a golfer’s wife,” they said. “They’re always away at tournaments and practicing, there has to be a lot of trust.” One point of contention is the “beautiful” spectators at the tournaments. The sport also requires the athlete to be away from home quite often, leaving most of the child-rearing up to the other parent. “It’s impossible to expect them to be home and able to help with the kids,” they added.
This report was published before their reconciliation, so it’s possible they’ve gotten through their rough patch. Plus, neither has responded to the claims of ongoing marital discontent.
In fact, McIlroy seemed to be in much better spirits after settling into their U.K. property in July 2025. “We came back a few weeks ago and moved into our new home in Wentworth and been since trying to settle in and it’s amazing what two weeks of a bit of detachment can do for you, and sitting there being with your own thoughts for a while,” he told The Telegraph. Though he cited his break from the unrelenting demands of professional golf as the reason for his improved mood, we’ll assume that moving past the potential divorce drama with Stoll, and all of the negative press it would’ve dredged up, also helped lift his spirits.
