Seven days ago, reality star Courtney Stodden took to Instagram to share an update.

Alongside a photo of herself inebriated, Stodden shared her decision to get sober, adding that she went “back and forth about posting” her journey publicly on social media.

“But my life has always been so public and this is a big part of my healing,” Stodden said, explaining her decision to go public with her sober journey.

“Alcohol, I’m breaking up with you,” she continued. “It’s been a toxic relationship for years. Something I used to cope, to escape, to survive. But it’s hurt me more than it’s ever helped me—publicly and privately.”

“Last night was the last time,” Stodden wrote on Tuesday, July 15. “I’m done letting it control me. I’m done feeling sick and ashamed. I want to be fully present in my life. I want to face my past, my trauma, and my current reality with clear eyes and real strength.”

“To those who understand this battle—thank you. Please respect my space as I walk this new path. It’s not easy, but it’s necessary.”

Stodden went on to share a tearfully emotional video 72 hours later.

With tears in her eyes, the now 30-year-old who gained notoriety as a teenager when she married then-51-year-old actor Doug Hutchinson, that when she was 16 years old, “I was placed into a world that I wasn’t ready for.”

“Doug, my 51-year-old husband, he drank, and he taught me how to drink and when he would drink bottles and bottles and bottles and bottles of alcohol, he would abuse me,” she claimed in the video. “And so I started drinking.”

“This is the third day,” she said of her sober journey, “and I’m very emotional. I’m like, getting stress hives because I think I’m like, realizing a lot of things that were…I think this is gonna happen. Does this happen?”

Stodden later in the video reflected on her relationships with friends that seemingly depend on alcohol and how her decision to get sober will affect those friendships.

People, who understand what Stodden is going through, took to the comment section to cheer her on, encouraging her to continue her journey.

“You’re doing so well, mama! Day 5 is the turning point. You can do this!!!! I’m so unbelievably proud of you,” one comment read.

“Hey babe you got this. It gets better and better and then blissful! I promise! Losing drinking friends is part of it. Doesn’t mean they don’t care or that you never speak to them again, but y’all may have different priorities and grow apart. People get weird because it forces them to have to look at their own relationship with alcohol. It doesn’t actually have anything to do with you, so don’t take it personally. You’re gonna be ok! Hang in there bb!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 ps you’re breaking out cuz you’re detoxing but you’ll be glowing in no time 🩷💋,” another comment added.

“You’ve got this. Sober friends are the best and there are so many of us! I’m almost at four years and started at 14, the first few days are hard, the first few weeks are hard but then it all keeps getting better. It’s so overwhelming to have a clear head, it’s like watching a movie of your life all over again. Kind of feels like an out of body experience but processing all of it gets easier, I swear and I promise. I’m always here if you need to talk and I’m so proud of you but for your honesty and courage,” wrote another friend.

Then on Tuesday, July 22, Stodden gave a one week update.

Alongside a photo of herself in a mirror, Stodden celebrated being one week sober. “1 week no alcohol! 🥹🩵 Week 2… I’m coming for you 💪🏻 #healing.”

The same day Stodden announced she was getting sober, The Hollywood Reporter announced that her story would be included in Lifetime’s “Ripped From the Headlines” films.

The project, narrated by Stodden herself, is currently expected to premiere in September, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

In response to the news, Stodden thanked the people who “worked hard on this very emotional and at times, challenging project.”
