Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard recently revealed that their daughters were less than pleased when they discovered their parents’ breakup back in 2007, with the girls showing a particular allegiance to their father.

In a lively discussion on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” Tuesday, the couple shared how Lincoln, 12, and Delta, 10, reacted to the portrayal of their separation in the film “Hit and Run,” which they were promoting. The 2012 movie, now available on Netflix, is an independent film penned by Shepard and loosely based on his real-life relationship with Bell, including a temporary split.

Shepard noted that their daughters, typically uninterested in their parents’ work like many children, were curious to see the film where “we’re very much in love.” He reminisced about the time they shot the movie, recalling a period when they were “childless, and we had nothing to do but love each other.”

Bell added that the kids enjoyed watching the romantic beginnings of their characters in the movie, appreciating the scenes where they were “young and in love” and starting to trust one another. However, she admitted that the breakup scene did not sit well with their daughters.

Bell explained that they loved watching the scenes where their characters were young and in love and “started trusting each other,” before sharing that they didn’t love the part of the film where they broke up.

“They were very upset,” Shepard agreed. “And what made me happy is they were mad at mom, not me.”

He continued jokingly, “They thought mom was a bitch. They thought dad was a good boy with a bad past and she should be able to overlook that and I agree.”

However, their little ones very much enjoyed the movie as a whole, even though it’s “so inappropriate.”

“They loved it,” Shepard said, adding, “It was a great litmus test for our children. They have a great sense of humor. They’ll go hard in the paint, our kids.”

The “Frozen” star, 45, revealed that she and her husband, 50, had not watched the movie in “forever.”

Shepard believes the flick has “aged like a Bordeaux [wine].”

The “Armchair Expert” host and Bell met in 2007 at an intimate birthday dinner for “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” producer, Shauna Robertson. Two weeks later, they stumbled into each other at a Detroit Red Wings hockey game, where they bonded over both being from Michigan. 

Their instant spark inspired Shepard to reach out to Robertson for Bell’s number.

The pair dated for three months until Shepard broke things off because he wasn’t ready to settle down.

“He sat me down and said, ‘I can’t have this right now. I think you’re wonderful, but I am still dating other people,’” Bell revealed in a Popsugar interview in 2017.

“Despite feeling disappointed, the actress said she respected the integrity it took for Shepard to be honest about his feelings.”

But their split didn’t last long and Shepard came crawling back after just four days apart.

“He called me and he was like, ‘I don’t know what I was thinking. I was dating someone else but they’re just not as interesting as you, and I don’t know what I’m doing,’ and he came back,” Bell shared.

By 2009, they got engaged and four years later, they welcomed their first child.

The pair tied the knot on Oct. 17, 2013, and welcomed their second child the following year.
