Dax Shepard acknowledges fans’ comments regarding his seemingly altered appearance, suggesting he might have undergone plastic surgery.
On the January 12 episode of his podcast, “Armchair Expert,” the 51-year-old Shepard reflected on how his appearance has changed over the years. This realization came while he was watching Parenthood with his daughters, Lincoln, 12, and Delta, 11, whom he shares with Kristen Bell.
“When I watch Parenthood with my kids, I’m struck by how ‘different’ I look,” Shepard shared with guest Kumail Nanjiani. “It’s like I’ve had a jaw implant or something. The thickening of the neck really alters your appearance.”
Nanjiani, 47, concurred, noting, “Absolutely. As body fat decreases, it definitely changes the facial structure.”
Nanjiani is no stranger to accusations that he’s had jaw implants. The comedian shut down the plastic surgery rumors during his podcast appearance.
“People think I got jaw implants or something. I have not. I have gotten no work done. All I did was, I got Botox. And then they were like, ‘While you’re here, you want to do your forehead too?’” he explained. “And I did it.”
However, Nanjiani said he would “never do it again.”

“I could not move my eyebrows. And I have very expressive eyebrows. And I had a job starting. I was going to act in something two months from then. And I was just terrified,” he recalled. “What if I can’t do it? Because what happens is, if you’ve got to make the faces, you stop feeling those things as well.”
Nanjiani also admitted to getting “microneedling.”
“But I want to make this clear: I don’t have jaw implants,” he told listeners.
Elsewhere in the podcast episode, Shepard got candid about receiving negative comments about his appearance and being called “ugly” in comparison to Bell, 45.

“I’ve been with Kristen for 20 years, and there have been hundreds of articles about, ‘Why is she with this guy?’ Lists of top 10 hot girls with ugly guys,” he said. “I’ve been dealing with that less now since the podcast, but for the first 12, 13 years we were together, there were hundreds of these lists of ugly guys with hot girls, and I’m always on it.”
Shepard said he’s had a few different reactions to these comments.
“I’m so hurt and insecure when you say that. Then I’m defensive and arrogant. I’m like, ‘Go meet my other girlfriends. They’ve all been hot. F*** you,’ right? I have this defensiveness,” he continued. “And then when I calm down, I really get into it. I’m like, you know, it’s so interesting. I think I know what’s going on. And it’s just [beaten] into us in elementary school and in school, which is like, there’s strata. You’re born into them. Someone shan’t migrate north or south. It’s disruptive to this whole system that we have been formatted in.”
Shepard also revealed that it’s often men who comment on his appearance.
“Guys are saying, ‘Kristen’s with this ugly guy.’ They’re threatened,” he added. “And I think, shouldn’t that be encouraging? Even if that’s your conclusion, like this four got this 10, isn’t that life-affirming and positive? Like, doesn’t that say you could achieve anything? I thought it would be comforting to dudes like me that are normal-looking. I think it’s the opposite.”
Shepard concluded, “I certainly see in the comments dudes going, ‘He’s so f***ing ‘roided out.’ Always if I’m with Kristen in a photo, then the guys come out hard. ‘This ‘roided out motherf***er.’ For the record, I’m not on steroids. Unless you count testosterone as a steroid, which I guess maybe technically it is. I am on testosterone.”
Bell and Shepard tied the knot in 2013 after six years of dating. Prior to their relationship, the actor was linked to Briegh Morrison, Kate Hudson and Shauna Robertson.
