Diane Keaton’s Hollywood dating history: From Woody Allen to Al Pacino

Diane Keaton had three famous loves before her death at 79.

The actress, whose death was confirmed on Saturday, was never married and never regretted that decision. However, she had high-profile relationships with Woody Allen, Warren Beatty and Al Pacino.

She then became a single mother in her 50s when she adopted her daughter, Dexter, 29, and son, Duke, 25.

Here’s a look back at Keaton’s relationship history.

Woody Allen

The Oscar winner’s first public relationship was with Allen.

She won an Oscar playing the title character opposite Allen in “Annie Hall,” which many believed was based on their relationship.

The two met in 1969 when Keaton auditioned for the Broadway production of Allen’s comedy, “Play it Again, Sam.” Allen wrote in his memoir, “Apropos of Nothing,” that he was immediately attracted to Keaton, who he described as “adorable, funny, totally original in style, real, fresh.”

The two eventually became lovers and lived together in Allen’s luxurious penthouse overlooking Central Park.

She disputed that belief in a 1977 New York Times article, claiming, “It’s not true, but there are elements of truth in it.”

The pair eventually split up when Keaton moved back to her home state, California, and landed a role in Francis Ford Coppola’s mob classic, “The Godfather.”

However, they remained close friends, with Keaton appearing in seven other Allen movies. She also supported him when his daughter, Dylan, accused him of sexual assault, a claim he has denied.

“Woody Allen is my friend and I continue to believe him,” Keaton wrote on X in January 2018.

Warren Beatty

Keaton was already dating Beatty when they co-starred in the 1981 film “Reds.”

In her memoir, “Then Again,” Keaton wrote that she had a crush on Beatty after seeing him in the 1961 movie “Splendor in the Grass” and couldn’t believe it when she began dating him.

In a 2017 HuffPo interview, Keaton shared that Beatty gave her sound advice when she wanted to do “unusual, artistic projects.”

“Warren said to me, ‘What are you, nuts? You wanted to be a movie star all your life, you get it and now you better take responsibility and deal with it.’ But I didn’t want to,” she recalled.

The “Father of the Bride” star also shared that Beatty was a romantic.

“I was terrified of flying and once I had to fly from L.A. to New York,” she remembered, “so he took me to the airport and said, “I’ll walk you onto the plane.” Then he sat down with me and the plane took off and he was still holding my hand. We landed and he kissed me goodbye and took the next plane back to L.A. Pretty cool.”

Al Pacino

The “Baby Boom” star also had an on-again, off-again relationship with her “Godfather” trilogy co-star, which finally ended after the filming of “The Godfather Part III.”

“He was very appealing, and the thing is, we kept running into each other because of work,” she told Huff Po. “Work brings people together; it’s very helpful. … Maybe I need another job to find another unobtainable great!”

She also described Pacino as “simply the most entertaining man…To me, that’s, that is the most beautiful face. I think Warren [Beatty] was gorgeous, very pretty, but Al’s face is like whoa. Killer, killer face.”

In his recent memoir, “Sonny Boy,” Pacino recalled going to his entertainment lawyer in the 1980s to discuss his paltry finances with Keaton in tow.

After discussing his meager savings, Keaton yelled at Pacino’s lawyer: “Do you know who he is?”

When the lawyer began to answer, the “Book Club” star jumped in again.

“Yeah, you’re going to tell me, ‘Oh, he’s an artist. No. He. Is. An idiot,” she yelled.

“He’s an ignoramus,” she continued. “When it comes to this, you’ve got to take care of him.”
