There are only a handful of designers left on Season 21 of Project Runway. The design competition reality TV show has had a drama-fueled season with some new twists—and what may be some of the harshest feedback the judges have ever given the contestants.
The competition among those who remain is fierce, but fans were upset when it was revealed this past week that the top three finalists might have been spoiled. Is it possible that a news clip could’ve given away who the final designers actually are?
A GMA Clip Could Be To Blame
A short segment from Good Morning America featured three of the Project Runway Season 21 cast members, welcoming them to participate in a coffee-inspired challenge. The description of the YouTube video details the game—as well as which of the cast members were invited to the show:
Law Roach, Christian Siriano and contestants Ethan Mundt, Belania Daley and Jesus Estrada dish on season 21 of the show and take on our Caffeine Couture Challenge.
While Ethan, Belania, and Jesus have all been popular contestants this season, all of them have been in the bottom during a Project Runway challenge, running the risk of being eliminated from the show. As of this article’s writing, it’s unclear who will be in the final episode of the season, and dedicated fans are upset that the GMA challenge may have spoiled who the top three are, arguing that the producers behind the show wouldn’t ask eliminated contestants to do such visible press.
Fans Are Torn About Whether It’s A Spoiler
In a Reddit thread discussing the GMA challenge, fans debated whether the Project Runway producers would be so bold as to send the actual top three designers to do a news segment ahead of revealing the final episode. One user believed it to be an absolute spoiler for the way things would go:
I know exactly which appearance you’re talking about and as soon as I saw it, I knew who the top 3 were, too. They wouldn’t make anyone do that much press otherwise. It really made me mad. Like, did they think we were dumb?
“Apparently they did.. or didn’t think that many people would watch GMA? And if that’s the case, why do it anyway? Kinda silly on their part,” added another. Others noted that, even if the challenge really was a spoiler, it didn’t actually matter too much, as the three designers were essentially who they would’ve expected anyway.
Others were less sure that Ethan, Belania, and Jesus were necessarily the season’s finalists. “I feel like they just picked the first three contestants to win a challenge (Ethan ep1, Jesus ep2, Belania ep3)? Not necessarily the three finalists,” an observant fan pointed out. Some viewers also noted that Belania had recently had a few poor weeks on the show, and that in the most recent challenge she even faced a potential double elimination when the episode ended on a major cliffhanger.
“Ugh Belania over Veejay is insane considering the monstrosity the former created last week,” shared a user. “I really hope this [theory] is true,” wrote another. “[Because] I want Belania out.” Those who have been keeping up with the season will know that, while Belania has won multiple challenges, one of her biggest issues is her attitude towards the judges. That is, when faced with criticism of her designs, she has a tendency to talk back or have “defensive body language” that the panel has found off-putting.
Though Belania has tried to adjust her attitude, she can still be caught rolling her eyes here and there. Only time will tell if she is indeed one of the final three this season.
