The ongoing drama surrounding the malfunctioning elevator at Equinox Printing House is reaching new levels of tension, as fitness enthusiasts find themselves at odds with the building’s upscale residents, according to Page Six.
We’ve chronicled the troubles of this notorious lift twice since 2024, as it continues to frustrate patrons with its frequent breakdowns.
The temperamental elevator has been more than just a nuisance; gym-goers are often stuck vying for ground-floor equipment, and it’s been known to trap members’ belongings in the upstairs locker rooms. Adding to the frustration, many of the gym’s luxurious amenities, such as the rooftop pool and “zen room,” are located on the higher floors.
However, there is some relief in sight, as plans to replace the elevator have been announced.
During the replacement process, which is expected to take a year, gym members will need to share the building’s main elevators with residents of the adjacent luxury apartments.
Tenants of the luxe building — where apartments go for $1 million to $3.5 million — are not thrilled about sharing the elevator with sweaty post-workout crowds of fitness fanatics.
A source tells us the board of the building is now deep in negotiations with the gym.
Apparently a plan to appease building residents is to offer free gym memberships.
“Some people would be ok with [that],” says a source. “But for those who already belong to a gym elsewhere, what are they going to get?”
A rep for Equinox tells us, “We’re actively working on this and do not have a timeline as of yet, but members will continue to have access to the entire club and all facilities.”
Back in August 2024, one gym member got stuck in the cursed elevator for nearly an hour before the FDNY rescued them. They were offered a $50 credit for their ordeal.
