On Friday, July 17, DeGeneres conveyed her condolences through Instagram, empathizing deeply with Jenner. She and her wife, Portia de Rossi, were moved by the passing of Mary Jo “MJ” Shannon and shared their heartfelt sympathies.
“Portia and I are fully aware of how deeply you cherished your mom and the extraordinary influence she had in your life and in the lives of your family,” wrote DeGeneres, 68, alongside a touching photo capturing Jenner with MJ. “The sorrow you must be experiencing now seems unimaginable. “Today, we said goodbye to my beautiful Mommy MJ. 😞💔,” Jenner wrote. “There are no words that could ever capture what she has meant to me or the heartbreak of having to say goodbye. My mom was the heart of our family. She taught me everything that truly matters … to love your family fiercely, to be kind, to show up for the people you love, and to never take a single moment together for granted. She taught us that family is everything.”
