In a shocking turn of events, acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner, 78, and his wife Michele, 68, were discovered dead in their Los Angeles residence, with authorities citing “apparent stab wounds” as the cause. Their son has emerged as a person of interest in this devastating case.
Just weeks prior to this incident, the couple was seen relishing a seaside getaway with their daughter, Romy. Images shared on Romy’s Instagram captured the family in high spirits, laughing and enjoying the ocean. Rob was spotted shielding himself from the sun with a baseball cap, while Michele sported a stylish dark swimsuit paired with matching sunglasses. In a heartfelt post accompanying more photos from their vacation, Romy expressed gratitude for family, health, and her diverse group of followers: “Thankful for family, health, and followers of any age.” The couple was later found in their Brentwood home by the authorities, prompting a significant police response. LAPD Captain Mike Bland confirmed they are treating it as an “apparent homicide.”
The Los Angeles Times reported that there were no signs of forced entry at the residence.
The Reiner family released a statement saying: “It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time.”
According to NBC, a source close to the family revealed that both Rob and Michele suffered multiple stab wounds.
While the pictures on Instagram show that they seemed to be a happy family, it has since been reported that police have confirmed to PEOPLE that their son Nick, 32, is being questioned by investigators.
Reiner first gained fame as Michael ‘Meathead’ Stivic, the outspoken son-in-law in Norman Lear’s All in the Family.
Following his stint on All in the Family, Reiner transitioned into directing full-time. His directorial debut, This is Spinal Tap, a 1984 mockumentary satirising rock bands, marked the start of a successful career behind the camera that spanned the ’80s and ’90s.
Michele Reiner, Rob’s wife of thirty years, was also an accomplished producer, actor and photographer and worked alongside her husband on many of his famous projects.
They met on the set of When Harry Met Sally, with Reiner stating their own romance inspired the film’s ending. They married in 1989, the year the film came out, and had three children together, Jake, Nick and Romy.
