Survivor Host Jeff Probst Cries in Episode 5, Season 48 Sneak Peek

Host Jeff Probst broke down in tears in the new episode of Survivor, and fans are fearing they’ll do the same after CBS shared a sneak peek of what’s to come.

The words, “In 48 seasons there has never been an episode of Survivor like this,” came across the screen bit by bit throughout the clip posted to Instagram on Monday, March 24, two days ahead of episode 5 airing on Wednesday, March 26. The clip was captioned, “A Survivor unlike any other …”

Jeff’s voice was heard during the opening telling contestants amidst the physical challenge, “This is a dangerous spot.”

A female contestant’s voice was heard saying, “Just take your time,” with another telling someone, “Tell yourself you can do it,” in an encouraging voice as shots of Fiji’s tropical trees and ocean were shown.

Jeff then noted, “Frustration really setting in,” before the camera zoomed in on a shot of the Civa tribe’s camp with no castaways in it.

The host appeared next in a shot from the physical challenge looking down at the ground with tears in his eyes while motioning his arms forward. “Wow, this has never happened,” Jeff said, although he seemed to be having a more heartfelt emotion than one of fear or worry.

Fans are concerned that the longtime host getting emotional was going to do the same to them.

“If Jeff cries, I’m going to cry!!!” one person wrote in the comments of the promo, while another added, “Who made Daddy Jeff cry? Because we are about to be crying.”

A third fan said she was for sure going to be in tears after already crying once during season 48.

“I’m doomed Wednesday night – I already sobbed once when Eva and Joe became besties,” a woman who noted she was eight months pregnant wrote.

The follower hinted that the tearful scene with Jeff might involve Eva Erickson, a 24-year-old contestant with autism. So far, she only revealed her condition to fellow Lagi tribemate Joe Hunter, as Eva told him having autism makes it difficult for her to tell when someone is lying. Thus, she feared becoming easily manipulated by other tribe members working against her.

Eva also confided in Joe, 45, what physical cues he should look for if she became overstimulated or had her emotions heightened. The firefighter assured her he would look out for her best interests at all times and became highly protective of Eva.

Unfortunately, a tribe swap in week 4 sent Joe to Vula while Eva remained on Lagi with Star Toomey, the one castaway in her tribe she didn’t get along with.

The pair were joined on the new Lagi by Mary Zheng, Charity Nelms and David Kinne. Fortunately for Eva, she quickly formed a bond with David, 39.

One of the voices in the promo appeared to be that of Mary, 31, giving the words of encouragement. In the scenes for this week’s episode shown at the end of the show on March 19, Jeff told the teams they were “tied” during the physical challenge while Eva groaned in visible frustration.

One Survivor fan wrote in the comments of the Instagram clip, “If I’m picking what they’re putting down, Eva might have a breakdown during a challenge. I hope the other players are good to her and understand the complex emotions behind autistic meltdowns. And based on Jeff’s emotions, I believe this is the case. Shoutout to Eva and Survivor in general for helping break the stigmas behind autism one day at a time.”

However, the camp shown in the promo was that of the orange Civa tribe and not purple’s Lagi. Civa is now made up of Sai Hughley, Cedrek McFadden, Mitch Guerra, Chrissy Sarnowsky, and Bianca Roses.

Bianca, 33, lost her vote in a journey while part of Lagi, although her new tribemates don’t know it yet. Former Vula member Cedrek, 46, formed a bond with new teammate Mitch, 34.

In the full preview for week 5, Sai, 30, was seen emerging from the ocean looking angry as one of her tribemates was heard saying, “Sai is causing chaos.” Mitch told a teammate, “I was about to pop off,” while looking upset, so while although the night’s drama might come from Civa, it may have nothing to do with Jeff’s tears.
