The Rusical maxi challenge on RuPaul’s Drag Race is one fans have grown to love over the years. When the challenge first debuted during Season 6, it was clear that it was going to become a recurring challenge in the Drag Race universe. What can we say: Everyone loves a good musical, and the queens of RPDR clearly know how to deliver some great performances.
There’s been some Rusicals from RPDR that have naturally stood out among the rest, and some that have just fallen short compared to others. There’s been 10 Rusicals that have come out of RPDR since Season 6, and some just naturally rank higher than others. Let’s take a look at every Rusical from RPDR, ranked.
10/10 PharmaRusical, Season 10
There’s honestly not much to say about the first Rusical from Season 10. The PharmaRusical itself was a hard idea to tackle in a musical format, and that showed during the performance. It’s definitely not one of our favorites.
9/10 Glamazonian Airways, Season 7
Phew, Glamaoznian Airways had a lot to live up to after the first Rusical came out during Season 6. The Rusical itself wasn’t horrible, but it was a little disjointed. Whether this can be blamed on the overall concept or the queens not-so-great performances that lacked overall star quality, it’s not one of the best Rusicals we’ve seen.
Sometimes we really question the concepts behind each Rusical. Social Media: The Unverified Rusical is one of those. While the idea of poking fun at each of the major social media platforms may sound great, this Rusical is pretty forgettable.
Season 10 saw two Rusicals grace the main stage of RPDR, and Cher: The Unauthorized Rusical was definitely the better of the two. The Rusical itself was pretty good, and it’s obviously memorable because the queens were replicating the one and only Cher.
6/10 Trump: The Rusical, Season 11
Trump: The Rusical from Season 11 definitely wasn’t the worst Rusical, but it’s also clearly not the best. The queens actually performed pretty great throughout this Rusical, but the idea itself was kind of confusing. Really, why would the plot of Grease be combined with Trump’s political storyline? To this day, we’re still trying to figure that out.

5/10 Bitch Perfect, Season 8
The Bitch Perfect Rusical was obviously modeled after the Pitch Perfect movies, and the Season 8 queens delivered. The overall concept was so funny, and there were some obvious standouts that came from this performance. You know who we’re talking about: Chi Chi DeVayne, and the rest of the “Lady Bitches,” of course. Bitch Perfect was the perfect opportunity for Chi Chi to show those judges why she was a force to be reckoned with. Really, her handstand split is an image we’ll never be able to get out of our heads, for all the right reasons.
4/10 Kardashian: The Musical, Season 9
The Season 9 Rusical is one that not many people label as one of the highest ranked Rusicals, but we absolutely love it. It’s safe to say that the “side” characters in this performance really stole the show during Kardashian: The Musical. Queens like Peppermint playing Britney Spears and Shea Coulee playing Blac Chyna dominated this performance and made it so memorable. Alexis Michelle as Kris Jenner sold the “momager” role as well, making this Rusical just so hilarious and enjoyable to watch.
3/10 Moulin Ru! The Rusical, Season 14
The Season 14 Rusical was incredibly entertaining, and it quite honestly shocked us. Each of the queens gave great performances, not to mention the duration of the Rusical itself was incredibly long. They each had to have incredible stamina in combination with great performance quality, which each queen did. Of course, Lady Camden was the natural standout, and she really pushed this Rusical over the top.
2/10 Shade: The Rusical, Season 6
As the first Rusical that ever graced the main stage of RPDR, Shade: The Rusical set the bar for the challenge extremely high. The concept of a Rusical was foreign before Season 6, and these queens undoubtedly cemented the challenge as a new staple for the rest of Drag Race herstory. From both Courtney Act and Adore Delano’s impeccable musical skills to the rest of the queens’ execution of the challenge, this Rusical still ranks as one of the highest among all the others that have come after it.
If you weren’t expecting the Season 12 Rusical to be at the top spot of this roundup, then you need to go back and rewatch that performance. Madonna: The Unauthorized Rusical is by far the best Rusical that has ever graced RPDR. The concept itself was a hard one for the queens to live up to: They were literally recreating the Queen of Pop’s iconic eras. However, each queen delivered, and many queens could have easily won the challenge. It’s the one Rusical that we always find ourselves going back to rewatch, really being able to enjoy each queen’s individual performance. One word: Iconic.
