Despite his celebrity status, Jamie, 51, treasures a peaceful life removed from the limelight in an Elizabethan manor tucked away in a quiet Essex village.

Despite his fame, the 51-year-old chef cherishes a serene existence away from the spotlight, residing in an Elizabethan manor nestled in a tranquil village in Essex.
Valued at an impressive £6 million, the stunning Spains Hall is situated near the picturesque village of Finchingfield, Essex. It provides a perfect retreat for Jamie, his wife Jools, and their five children: Daisy Boo, Poppy Honey, Buddy Bear, Petal Blossom, and River Rocket. Originally from Clavering, Essex, Jamie opted to trade in his 25-year city life in London for the peace of rural living, a decision inspired by the pandemic. Spanning 70 acres, Spains Hall boasts 10 bathrooms, two drawing rooms, and a historic great hall.
Additionally, the estate includes a six-bedroom farmhouse from the 16th century, a three-bedroom lodge, and beautifully converted stables scattered throughout the property.
Nonetheless, the exact motivation behind Jamie’s choice of this sprawling manor remains something of a mystery.
“No one really knows why I bought this house,” he once confessed to The Times, alluding to the timing of his move, which coincided with the downfall of his restaurant chain, Jamie’s Italian.
His heartfelt comments underscore his profound attachment to the property: “It’s an old gaff that’s falling down; only an idiot would buy it. But to have come from where I was born to that house that’s only had three families owning it in 600 years, for me as a kid that went through special needs in school, it’s social mobility.”

The historic estate, with its fascinating story of a botched burglary, is shrouded in intrigue. More than a century ago, criminals ditched their stolen loot in the property’s lake after experiencing vehicle problems, leaving the haul underwater until it was discovered 150 years later by the home’s new occupants.
Finchingfield, frequently described as England’s most photographed village, features an assortment of colourful cottages, a traditional windmill, and a charming duck pond, all nestled around a quintessential village green.
Jamie previously expressed his affection for Finchingfield to ES Magazine, stating, “Home is a little village in Essex called Finchingfield. It’s a beautiful little place and somewhere I used to take Jools for dates when we were younger.”
He looked back on his former London lifestyle, which lasted 25 years, before choosing post-pandemic to adopt a more countryside way of living: “Before that [home] was London for 25 years. After Covid, we decided to sort of make the jump.”

In a candid admission made a few years ago, the celebrated chef told BBC Radio 4’s Young Again podcast that he would gladly swap his fame for a peaceful existence, wishing to live a “normal” life and run a pub.
Tucked away along the B1052 between Braintree and Saffron Walden, Finchingfield sits just 54 miles from the chaos of London.
According to Rightmove, house prices in Finchingfield have risen by an average of £606,395 over the last year.
Overall, the historical sold prices in Finchingfield over the last year were 11% down on the previous year and 15% down on the 2023 peak of £716,036.
