Hollywood legend Robert Redford died on Tuesday at the age of 89, surrounded by his loved ones at his Utah home. The actor and director was showered with tributes as stars from across the film industry paid their respects. He is most renowned for his roles in iconic films such as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting, All the President’s Men, and Out of Africa. Cindi Berger, CEO and chairman of talent agency Rogers and Cowan PMK, confirmed the heartbreaking news on Tuesday.

She stated: “Robert Redford passed away on September 16, 2025, at his home at Sundance in the mountains of Utah–the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved. He will be missed greatly. The family requests privacy.” Robert’s personal life was as vibrant as his on-screen characters, and he leaves behind a wife and two surviving children. He was married twice, first to Lola Van Wagenen from 1958 to 1985 and later to Sibylle Szaggars in 2009. Robert had four children with Van Wagenen: the late Scott, Shauna, the late James, and Amy.

It is estimated that Robert amassed an impressive fortune of $200million throughout his life, according to Celebrity Net Worth. His wealth may be left to his environmental artist wife Sibylle, 68, and his children Shauna, 64, and Amy, 54.

The Hollywood legend, was not only known for his acting prowess but also for founding the Sundance Institute, a non-profit organisation that supports independent filmmakers. The institute hosts the annual Sundance Festival, widely regarded as the largest independent film festival in the US.

In response to the heartbreaking news of Robert’s passing, the institute expressed: “We are deeply saddened by the loss of our founder and friend Robert Redford. Bob’s vision of a space and a platform for independent voices launched a movement that, over four decades later, has inspired generations of artists and redefined cinema in the US and around the world.

“Beyond his enormous contributions to culture at large, we will miss his generosity, clarity of purpose, curiosity, rebellious spirit, and his love for the creative process.

“We are humbled to be among the stewards of his remarkable legacy, which will continue to guide the institute in perpetuity.”

The iconic actor made Utah his home, setting up the Sundance Film Festival there after falling head over heels for the location. Paying tribute, Utah’s governor Spencer Cox said: “He cherished our landscapes and built a legacy that made Utah a home for storytelling and creativity.

“Through Sundance and his devotion to conservation, he shared Utah with the world. Today we honour his life, his vision, and his lasting contribution to our state.”

Tributes have flooded in from Hollywood, including Star Trek actor William Shatner, who expressed: “Condolences to the family of Robert Redford.”

Colman Domingo thanked Robert for his “everlasting impact,” which he believes “will be felt for generations”.

Actress Jamie Lee Curtis also shared her tribute: “A LIFE! FAMILY. ART. TRANSFORMATION. ADVOCACY. CREATION. LEGACY.”

Following Robert’s passing, his family have chosen to delete his Instagram account.

A statement on his official account announced: “It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Robert Redford. In honour of his legacy, his Instagram account will be deleted.”
