Rob Reiner and his daughter Romy shared a deep, unbreakable connection that stayed strong until his untimely passing.
Tragedy struck on December 14 when Romy discovered both her father, the esteemed filmmaker, and her mother, Michele Singer Reiner, fatally stabbed in their Los Angeles residence.
In the wake of this devastating event, her brother Nick was charged with two counts of first-degree murder just days later.
This Saturday marks Romy’s 28th birthday, a poignant milestone she faces without her cherished father by her side.
In a heartfelt tribute shared on his birthday in 2022, Romy lovingly called Rob her “best friend,” highlighting the profound bond they shared.
“Happy birthday to my other best friend,” she wrote on Instagram at the time, along with several photos capturing their sweet memories.
On Father’s Day last year, Romy expressed how she loves hanging out with the “When Harry Met Sally” writer for hours on end.
“Happy Father’s Day to the man who I could talk to forever and also the man who I can sit in silence with and be perfectly content,” she wrote in the June 2021 post.
“Love you forever,” she added.
Just weeks before his death, Romy was seen enjoying a family vacation with her dad.
She shared a slideshow of images and videos on Nov. 29, which captured her with Rob as they went swimming in a tropical location. Romy notably had a big smile as she splashed around with the late Hollywood icon.
Romy’s social media feed isn’t just a highlight reel of her family vacations — her Instagram is also filled with candid, funny, and deeply personal exchanges between her and her father.
Last October, Romy posted an Instagram video in which she was seen cutting her dad’s hair while asking him for career advice.
“Since the nepo thing isn’t working out, I’m asking my dad for some help in another arena… what do you think?” she captioned the adorable post.
“My career hasn’t even remotely taken off,” she said in the clip before jokingly asking if he would be willing to pay for her to get a “Brazilian Butt Lift” surgery to make people take her more seriously.
“I think they’ll say, ‘wow, look at her craft,’” she said, to which he replied, “Her craft and her crack.”
The video ended with Rob offering some sage advice, deadpanning, “I would say don’t do it, but my feeling is — it’s your ass.”
This past May, Romy also recorded a video in which she asks the political activist to discuss “The 3 Rules of Getting Older.”
He shares his wisdom, telling her, “never pass up a bathroom,” “don’t waste a hard-on,” and “never trust a fart.”
Romy and Rob have a hilarious back-and-forth in which they both decide not to further discuss his second rule.
“I don’t wanna know about the middle one,” Romy said, to which he replied, “No, I don’t think you want to hear about that…This is a father-daughter thing… How much do you need to know about your father’s prostate?”
She quickly cuts him off, saying, “No, we’re done.”
Romy wasn’t just best friends with her dad — they were also neighbors, as she lived right across the street from her parents’ home.
Romy and her older brother Jake addressed their gruesome deaths in a heartbreaking statement — without making any mention of their brother Nick.
“Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day,” Romy and Jake said in a statement to Page Six on Dec. 17.
“The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience.”
The siblings described Rob and Michele as being more than just parents, calling them their “best friends.”
“We are grateful for the outpouring of condolences, kindness, and support we have received not only from family and friends but people from all walks of life,” they wrote. “We now ask for respect and privacy, for speculation to be tempered with compassion and humanity, and for our parents to be remembered for the incredible lives they lived and the love they gave.”
A source shared that Romy and Jake are leaning on Michele’s sisters as they cope with their “unimaginable loss.” Suzanne and Martine have reportedly “stepped in” to “support” Romy and Jake, an insider told Us Weekly.
“The community has really come together for the family as well, because Rob and Michele had such a huge network of close friends,” the source added. “Everyone just wants to help in any way that they can.”
Romy has also been leaning on Jake, with a source sharing that they are both “numb right now.”
She and Jake will honor their mom and dad with a memorial service at a later date, their spokesperson told People on Dec. 22.
“Jake and Romy Reiner remain grateful for the outpouring of love and support they have received,” their rep told the outlet.
The beloved couple, who tied the knot in 1989, were cremated, and their remains were returned to their eldest son.
