Harry Styles was just sixteen years old when he first auditioned for The X Factor in 2010 and became a part of one of the world’s biggest boybands, One Direction. Given that he and the rest of the boys were so young when their music careers took off, it’s hard to believe any of them ever did anything else.
However, what fans may not remember about Styles is that he actually did have a job, long before One Direction ever existed. Just like many other teenagers, he was getting his hands dirty and working a normal job to help him earn a little bit of extra money.
What Job Did Harry Styles Do Before One Direction?
Fans of Styles will know that he is nothing short of a hard worker. In fact, since One Direction split up, he has become the most successful member of the band, becoming a multi-award-winning artist in his own right and with both his albums going straight to number one.
But long before he became a successful singer, Styles actually worked a much more normal job. This was something he revealed in the One Direction movie, One Direction: This Is Us, in 2013, and given the success that he has achieved now, it’s likely to be something even the biggest fans of the singer will have forgotten.
In the movie, he revealed that before he auditioned for The X Factor, he was working in a bakery in his hometown of Holmes Chapel in Cheshire. This was a Saturday job, and it’s likely that anyone who went into that bakery around that time will have unknowingly been served by a future star.
He also only earned a mere £6 an hour whilst working there; which is definitely a far cry from the amounts that he is earning now.
Given how good Styles is at entertaining the crowds at his shows, both when he is singing and whilst talking to them, it will come as no surprise that he was really good at his job in the bakery and that the other employees loved him. His boss even referred to him as the most polite staff member that has ever worked there.
His naturally good nature and manners shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise as this is clearly one of many things that Styles has carried with him from a young age.

Even his former step-father John Cox has said that Styles was an absolute delight to be around; and given that this is coming from someone who is no longer in his life, it can easily be seen that the man fans see on stage is the same in real life too.
In fact, to show how down-to-earth Styles still is, despite the fact that the movie was filmed in 2013 at the height of One Direction’s fame, he still got back behind the counter when he went to visit his old workplace to do the first job he ever had.
Even though it was a very different direction from what he does now, he still enjoyed his time at the bakery, and who knows? Perhaps if he ever decides to give up singing, he could always go back there.
What Did Harry Styles Want To Become If He Hadn’t Been A Singer?
As Styles was a mere sixteen-year-old at the time that he rose to fame, it’s more than likely that aside from singing, he will have thought about a backup option if this didn’t work out.
As he was just about to start college before he auditioned for The X Factor and his life changed forever, he revealed that if the audition hadn’t gone as it did, he was planning on studying law, sociology and business at college and that he also wanted to go to university.
The career path he would have taken had he not become famous was to be a physiotherapist. However, at a school careers day, he was told that there aren’t many jobs in physiotherapy, so Styles decided to abandon that idea and become a singer. Sounds odd when you consider how difficult it is to get into the music industry, but thankfully, he was in the right place at the right time.
His other career options were to either become a teacher, florist or lawyer. This is definitely a wide range of choices, but, obviously, none of them ever saw the light of day due to the early age at which he achieved success in the music and film industries.
Is Harry Styles Planning On Quitting The Music Industry For Something Else?
Despite how successful Styles has been in the music industry, given the increasing amount of acting roles he has taken under his wing, and the fact that he previously stated that he had considered quitting the music industry after suffering from writer’s block, it may be a worry to his fans that one day he might give everything up.
However, given how committed he is to his music and the fact that at the time of writing, he is on his Love On Tour tour, it seems unlikely that he will be quitting the music industry any time soon. But, time will only tell whether this remains or if he will one day decide to pursue something else.
