Don Gilet has captured the hearts of audiences as the charismatic lead detective in the BBC crime series “Death in Paradise,” having taken over from Ralf Little in 2024. DI Mervin Wilson, the character he brings to life, has impressed fans with his compelling story arcs, especially through his reconnection with his troubled brother, Solomon. However, Gilet’s talent extends far beyond this role, as he has built an impressive resume over the years.

Many viewers may remember Gilet from his long-standing portrayal of the infamous serial killer Pastor Lucas Johnson on “EastEnders,” a role he inhabited for almost 16 years on the BBC. Yet, his career also boasts unexpected appearances, including a stint on a competing network.

Gilet’s acting journey began with his first credited role in 1991 on ITV’s crime drama “The Bill.” He made a memorable return to the series 12 years later, playing the character Martin Fisher in the episode titled “Doghouse.”

In stark contrast to his current detective persona, Gilet’s earlier appearances had him basking in the Caribbean sun, a far cry from his serious on-screen duties. During the early 2000s, Gilet was seen sporting a casual look with a white graphic T-shirt and matching baseball cap as his character navigated legal troubles.

In another episode, his character showed a more mature side, donning a pink jumper over a blue polo shirt during a police interview. Gilet’s charm and wit shone through these appearances, often helping his characters out of tricky situations, much to the delight of his audience.

But in 2024, the dad-of-one made his debut as the latest detective to front the Caribbean drama during the Christmas special. He is just the latest fictional British cop to head to the island to help locals fight crime.

It sees him following in the footsteps of Ben Miller, Kris Marshall, Ardal O’Hanlon, and, most recently, Ralf Little. Speaking of stepping into their shoes, Don gushed: “This is a big show, with a big heart, and the love continually grows for it. It is my intention to never lose sight of that and to remain grateful, humble and dedicated.”
