John Cusack has long kept his romantic life out of the spotlight. The actor is among the relatively few Hollywood stars who have never married, and he seldom speaks publicly about his relationships. Women romantically linked to the “Being John Malkovich” star have generally followed that same discreet approach. Still, several former partners have shared warm impressions of Cusack over the years, beginning with Melissa Gilbert.
In her 2009 memoir “Prairie Tale,” Gilbert wrote that she had a brief romance with Cusack while she was dating Rob Lowe, Cusack’s co-star in 1983’s “Class.” “We ended up having a little fling, which I kept from Rob … He was very sweet — and funny,” she wrote. Decades later, Susannah Melvoin, a former Prince backup singer and dancer who also dated Cusack in the 1980s, offered a similarly glowing assessment. “John Cusack is very funny and smart,” she told Dyes Got the Answers 2 Ur ?s in 2013.
Minnie Driver, who was rumored to have dated Cusack while they made the 1997 film “Grosse Pointe Blank,” has also spoken fondly about their bond. Appearing on “This Life of Mine… with James Corden” in 2024, Driver said the pair had “this massive connection.” She praised her former co-star again in 2026, calling him “incredibly intellectually challenging and stimulating and fun” during an interview with E! Live (via People). Gilbert, Melvoin, and Driver have all kept the specifics of their relationships private. Cusack’s “Say Anything” co-star Ione Skye, however, shared far more about their history.
Ione Skye offered more details about her John Cusack fling
While most women linked to John Cusack have said little, if anything, about their time with him, Ione Skye provided a closer look at his private life during the making of their beloved 1989 movie “Say Anything.” In her 2025 memoir, “Say Everything”, Skye recalled asking Cusack about his love life while they discussed the film’s plot. “I’ve never been in love. At least not till recently,” he told her, according to excerpts reported by Entertainment Tonight.
His comment initially left Skye wondering whether their powerful onscreen connection had begun to spill into their real-life friendship, which was platonic at that point. She soon learned, though, that Cusack had been talking about his then-girlfriend, Susannah Melvoin. Their chemistry remained confined to the screen — at least at the time. After Skye divorced Beastie Boys member Adam Horovitz in 2000, she and Cusack reconnected. “I’d needed to get him out of my system and it had worked — now I knew we were meant to be in love only in the movies,” she wrote.
Cusack was reportedly disappointed by how Skye characterized their romance. In a 2025 interview with People, Skye recalled him texting, “You made the experience sound so meh! It wasn’t ‘meh’ for me.” Skye nevertheless defended her account, explaining, “It was more about how all of our chemistry was in our working together and stimulating each other’s minds, not sleeping together!” She added, “I felt a little bad, but, oh well.” Cusack may have never married, but the comments from women in his past suggest he left a largely positive impression as a partner.
