A fresh Agatha Christie television adaptation is currently in development. It will feature Harry Potter star Imelda Staunton alongside several other renowned actors.

BritBox has revealed particulars of Agatha Christie’s Tommy and Tuppence, a brand new six-episode adaptation of the celebrated writer’s beloved novels and short stories.

Imelda, renowned for portraying Dolores Umbridge in two Harry Potter films, will appear as Aunt Ada, a retired private investigator who should not be underestimated.

She’ll be joined by Josh Dylan, known from Mamma Mia 2, who will portray Ada’s nephew Tommy, described as a “meticulous, charming crime writer who has lost his passion”.

Completing the ensemble is Antonia Thomas, recognised for her role in The Good Doctor, playing Tuppence, an actress who assists Tommy in rediscovering his enthusiasm when she re-enters his world.

The synopsis hints: “Tommy and Tuppence are a detective duo for the ages. They fall in love, fall out of it, and tumble back in, all while solving some thrilling, entertaining mysteries along the way.”

The programme, created by BBC Studios’ Lookout Point alongside Agatha Christie Limited, will commence production later this year.

Agatha Christie’s Tommy and Tuppence represents the inaugural modern English-language television adaptation of the author’s tales, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Phoebe Eclair-Powell, who has contributed to projects such as The Road Trip, penned and executive-produced the series, which marks her debut drama series commission for television.

Speaking about the series, Phoebe previously said: “Christie’s detective duo are witty, sharp and raring to solve lots and lots of murders whilst asking if they should really be more than just partners in crime.”

Laura Lankester, Katie Draper, and Louise Mutter from Lookout Point, along with James Prichard from Agatha Christie Limited, also executive produce.

The opening four episodes are helmed by Fergus O’Brien, renowned for his work on programmes including Happy Valley and The Tourist, whilst the concluding two will be overseen by Ellie Heydon.

Stella Merz, who previously worked on Gentleman Jack and Miss Austen, serves as producer for the forthcoming series.

The series, commissioned by Robert Schildhouse, Jon Farrar, and Stephen Nye on behalf of BritBox, will comprise six 45-minute episodes.
